So who will come in this time to steal Liverpool’s ‘major signing’ as the club will no doubt procrastinate over a financial deal for a player that could be sealed quickly if they would just pay the going rate, instead of trying to get him on the cheap, leading to a bidding war which they never seem to win?

I hope that our negotiation tactic is not offering the maximum for the player right away. Keep the allowed range close to your vest, always lowball first, leaving ample room to notch it up if it need be. We have been to rigid and slow in that regard in the past.

If Dnipro want 20 mill, I think that's not that unreasonable. just south of Arshavin's, a similar player.

I don't think you have to worry about us offering top dollar straight away, ayres penny pinching negotiations has already cost us at least one signing and will probably cost us this one 2. What he should do is go in and offer an acceptable amount to both parties on the understanding that the deal is wrapped up in 24/48 hours. (Bit like buying a house and agreeing a price so the house is taken off the market). Too much time spent trying to save a couple of quid. If you want the player, pay the money or walk away....stop ****ing dithering!

Inflexible negotiations and ultimatums can bite you in the ar$e if you're not dealing with desperate parties.

In the past IMO we've been slow at ramping it up from start to finish of negotiations, suggesting we either go in too high, or let them know we're flexible (stupid to hint that), or go in with no significant range to begin with.

It's all about finding the common ground where both parties are happy but I feel that we aren't prepared to do that. Always comes across as "that's our offer, take it or leave it."
With other clubs it's
Rumour
Substantiated rumour
Offer
Signature
And it happens fast. Within a week usually. Look at cabaye. Rumoured Monday signed today ( yes I know psg are rich) . If he's what you want get him. At lot is at stake this season. We are in a strong position. Don't penny pinch or it could cost us much much more

Yeah, we probably take our assigned player "value" too seriously, as though it were scientific, causing a reluctance to ramp our offers fast or high enough.

When in fact we should be more risk-taking, especially this year (with ManU wobbly), and especially when the risks on the side of inaction could be of crippling consequences (in this case losing Sterling or one of SAS).

On "Club-Appeal" it would probably be pretty even.

We have the better history- we're a significantly bigger club, and much bigger fan base. We're slightly ahead in the table.
However, in Spurs favour- the London factor and the fact that they did better in the last complete season. If they look at the table today and see we're about even... then look at last year- and see Spurs in Europe and we're not.

We look like the best bet going forwards by appearance on the pitch- but Spurs are more willing to throw money around on top-teammates.

So on appeal- we're probably dead-even overall.

So then it comes to money. Well... we know Spurs would be willing to top the salary of anything we would offer. For that fact alone- if Spurs really are in for the guy... they might well poach him off us.

I'm sure he'd rather line up next to Suarez than Loldado.

He must be mental to choose Spurs over us <ok>

They probably haven't even bid anyway!!

Alexey Yaroshevsky ‏@YaroLFC 37m (remember this guy from all the Miki Ryan talk?)

Stop this panic. No credible sources in Ukraine confirm Spurs are in the race for Kono. For now, at least

Well... I agree... no panic from me. He sounds a good target... but again- not the position we need. It would be embarrassing if we lose another player in similar circumstances- but it's still not the position we need anyway (I hope that's being worked on).

I'm merely explaining why Spurs could take someone from us... and why they did last season.

In terms of appeal- we're about even... but Spurs are more willing to take on debt to get their man. They have the upper hand. (I agree- I doubt Spurs are really interested though).

More reason to get top 4. If we do- Spurs are one less club that can take people as easily. We would then be the bigger club AND in Europe ahead of them... so then they HAVE to offer more money just to be an equal draw.

Some of you worry me! You spout about negotiating without any real idea about negotiating technique

Laws of Negotiation

If you don't have to negotiate then don't as you will not achieve all that you want

You must aim to achieve a WIN/WIN situation

Make your opening bid/demand your best at its the best you will achieve. i.e. bid low/demand high

The rest is merely operational.

13. Equally makes me laugh how people complain about Ayre dithering as if they know whats actually happening.

Some are moaning that we're not just coughing up. I'd prefer us to penny pinch then blow millions more than we need to like before.

This has simply come up because of Chelsea getting Salah - BR prob said about us being in for him still when Chavs had their offer accepted so we coul get our price sorted with kono under the radar

No disrespect, but the guys in charge get paid Hundreds of thousands of pounds each year to do this and have done it for many years. I'm pretty sure they're not just offering the max we can offer and then not being able to move on that. Don't think they would have got to where they are without being prudent with money and negotiations.

So you think that a 2 1/2 month negotiating is not dithering. We don't know what goes on and neither do you.
We have lost a lot of potential signings and that can't all be down to players preferring other clubs because it doesn't appear to happen elsewhere.
