I want to see England get a nice tough group to prove they are good enough. Teams like Belgium, Croatia, Serbia and Wales would be a good test.

don't you have that in the world cup this year? not a better pressure point tbh

I wouldn't read much into a World Cup group in red hot Brazil whether we go through or go out. A qualifying group separated out over a prolonged period with home and away fixtures would give a better sample in my opinion.

that's exactly the opposite of england...

england always do well in league tables.. but at pressure points they crumble <doh>

Well in my opinion, it's similar to comparing testing a teams credentials in the FA cup or the league. Not quite the same as hardly anyone fields a full strength side in the **** all cup, but anything can happen, form comes and goes and if you enter a tournament just at the wrong time....

You know what I mean anyway.

i'm pretty sure teams in the world cup don't play lesser squads.. and apart from euro 2008 england qualify for everything usually comfortably but **** it up in tournaments.. even though in friendlies england get decent results against the top sides..

You misread my post.

I agree that England always end up **** in competition.

I've already written this World Cup off really and just hoping for a good game or two and not go out on a whimper when we go.

Not because I think we're ****, just because the conditions won't suit us at all, along with a fair few other teams in the tournament. Teams more used to hotter climates like Spain, Portugal etc could do well, but our hottest day is probably about the same as Brazils coldest day and that has to have an effect.

I think euro 16 in France and wc 18 in Russia will be better judges for us.

England always seem to end up with Montenegro, Poland, Ukraine and Andorra. So probably them. How are Montenegro still only a Pot 4 team?

Just look at Greece in Euro 2004.

There's no chance in hell they were even in the top 10 in Europe, but they still won the ****ing thing.

Precisely. Rare it happens that way round, but there's the proof. Usually it's one or more of the big teams staying at home and having a mare. Holland in the euros for prime example, reach the WC final2 years earlier, looking next to unstoppable, didn't they even lose to Denmark in the group?

that's a pretty lame excuse <lame> what about germany 2006, south africa 2010, euro 2008? euro 2012? france 98? euro 2000? euro 96?

They lost all three games in Euro 2012.

Only Ireland did worse in the tournament.

I remember Germany going out at the group stage at Euro 2004, as did Italy and Spain.

Argentina in 2002 World Cup is a good one. They were bookies favorites to win it pre-tournament, and they finished third in our Group behind us and Sweden.

i would like england to win 2014 world cup btw, before you mistake me for some anti england hater, i just prefer scotland in a england v scotland match but since it's happened once in the 2000's you can forgive me?
