Chris Perry has told talkSPORT it would be 'catastrophic' if Nicola Cortese left Southampton - and warned manager Mauricio Pochettino and many players could follow suit.

Speculation is rife the executive chairman may walk out on the Saints following disagreements with owner Katharina Liebherr, who took over the club after her father, Swiss businessman Markus Liebherr, died in 2010.

Cortese has been pivotal in Southampton's rise from League One to challenging for European action in the Premier League this season and it's feared his exit would lead to a mass exodus at the south coast club.

"I think speculation not only about the chairman but also about the manager is the main thing," Perry told Drivetime.

"The club has made so many strides forward over the last few years that a change at the top in both those positions would be catastrophic."

Saints boss Pochettino previously said in May, when Cortese was again considering his position, he would leave should the chairman do so.

"If Mauricio Pochettino was to leave as well it would leave a lot of the players a little bit disillusioned with where the club is going and which manager would come in," added Perry. "A lot of these players are very high profile now and would have a lot of suitors."

So many big egos in football at present, the nutter at Hull, the nutter at Cardiff, now Cortese spits out his dummy, makes QPR seem like the Sea of Tranquility...

he's officially gone, their manager said he will go if Cortese resigns and a woman is in charge who has no interest in football and is trying to sell the club.
fans aren't too happy and the only thing that could make it better is if Rupert Lowe is the one buying.

Saints need a new Godfather - I wonder if Mauricio Pochettino will follow suit?

Some breaking news from the south coast - Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese has resigned, with owner Katharina Liebherr installing herself as his replacement.

Cortese tendered his formal resignation in the autumn and has since served the notice period on his contract.

Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino said last season he would leave if the 45-year-old Italian departed.

"With great regret we have accepted the resignation of Mr Cortese. He has done a wonderful job and we very much wanted him to stay," said Liebherr.

Nicola Cortese certainly looks like the type of guy who could do a Jimmy Hoffa style "concrete" job on someone?

We are building a new stadium, so could possibly lose a few in the foundations?

Well Portsmouth fans will be happy to see that. Next Abramovich to pull plug on Chelski that Cardiff owner/chairman to do one followed by the maniac that owns Hull City Football Club.

If only Carlsberg did Chairman.

Sounds to me like they are having the Cardiff or Flavio chairman scenario.

Again this makes me feel lucky we have uncle Tony.

Apparently the Hull owner walks away today when his 24-hour deadline expires with his 'Tony the Tiger' cuddly toy in his suitcase...

Thank God for Fernandes. He has not lost his humble roots.

The arrogance of the Hull bloke 'nobody on earth tells me how to run my business'. That means he is surrounded by sycophantic yes men who dare not disagree with him. Far too high an opinion of himself.
