Ok, so wityhout offending anybody, I have a question abou thtis whole issue.

Firstly, I would give my life not to be in the position of this little girls parents. I can only imagine how hard it must be for them.
They will be missing (only word icould think of) thier daughter so badly
They will obviously face the accusations of it being thier own fault, being bad parents, and even; I suspect; being part of the whole elaborate set up.

So my question is this.
Given the number of children who go missing every week across the UK. Why is it that this one has stayed in the news for so long? Why arent others as publicised as this?
Is it because her parents are wealthy, have the right contacts or 1 is a solicitor (I think)?
Is there more to it than we know?
What about the countless other children across England and even the globe. Why do they not receive the same publicity?

Im not knocking anyone for keeping this fresh in our minds, just wondering whats so diffrent about this case that keeps it in the news.

Maybe I'm genuinely missing something?

If Maddy went missing on the day Princess Di died or on 9/11 I doubt that she would be in our conciousness now. Her sad tale would of been buried below that of what the press deem to be more newsworthy and important.

Take for instance this example... Which famous actress died the same day as Michael Jackson? On any other day she would of been headline news.

That's why we are still reading about her sad disappearance.

Fair enough Nines. I only ask as I saw something on the news this morning and couldnt figure out what was so diffrent about this case to any others.

Madeline was/is a Leicester girl so her family's story has always been in the hearts of Leicestershire residents but I don't think the story would still be going if, as 9s has pointed out, she didn't go missing on such a 'slow news day'.

The story claimed the attention of millions worldwide so it was only natural that newspapers carried on with every last detail of the story.

Erm, I think you'll find young children aren't abducted by strangers every week in the uk, in fact it is extremely rare and most are murdered when they are. Most children who go missing are through family break ups and one of the parents takes the child/children. The reason this has stayed in the news is because A. It happened in a holiday resort where the child was left unattended, B. The parents were suspected of fowl play and C. Unlike in most cases the child hadn't been found dead or alive. There are lots of other reasons that this is still in peoples minds but I would say those are the main ones!

And by abducted I mean properly taken away for a period of time rather then walked across the park to some swings or something like that.

I was purely wondering from a parents point of view, why this story has been running so long. Im not critcising or pointing any fingers, I just wondered if (god forbid) the same thing had happened to one of my kids, would i get the same level of coverage, of is it because they are "in with the right people"

i think supers reasons make sense, but i refuse to believe that this is the 1st and only time its happened...so the question is, why dont we hear bout the other cases?

Also the commitment of the parents in the 'find maddie' campaign and the incompetent Portuguese police probably help, so bad they are that the British police have had to go out and do their job for them! It's a British child, the papers aren't going to report on children from another country going missing unless it is particularly interesting for some reason.

Mate, that is exactly the point I am making.
I would fully expect it to stay in the local media, regardless of the area..So for that point the location is completely irrelivant.

Im sure many Leicester locals have been on top of this for a long time, but i was questioning why I, here in Queensland, am still seeing articles on the national news regarding this subject.
Im not playing down the seriousness or heartbreak it must obviously cause. I have just honestly not seen why this case, as opposed to many others, has taken up so much "news time"

Why do we not see all the other similar cases still in the newsfeed.? After re-reading my post it appears that It could be taken the wrong way as maybe a moan or something.

For the record, I have only been in QLD for 4 years. Born and bred in London so the "man down under" quote is not really relevant. All my friends, family and most people I know are still there.

Are you, or are you not, down under? I was going to call you an Australian but I thought, because of your obvious QPR connections, that you'd be English.

It's still news because when the story broke it captured the hearts of everyone globally.

Newspapers are printed to be sold. The story sells, hence why it's being printed.

The story may not appeal to you and fair enough, but it obviously appeals to others.

The McCann story was first brought to global news because fook all had happened that day.

The story quickly spread as it coincided with the beginnings of social media and so it quickly grasped worldwide attention.

This story is one that the media know will sell so they continue to sell it on slow news days because they know that there are a lot of people who follow it with extreme interest.

It's all to do with the profile of the parents. They have been given sympathetic treatment in the press because they are 'professionals'. If it had been a single mum on holiday from a council sink estate she would have been pilloried in the press for leaving the kid unattended. Simple as that. They have the wealth and contacts to keep this going principally to hide their guilt at having left their kids on the night...

Another child went missing at the same time but got very little coverage in the news. It was a story which was picked up on and grew. Sad how this happwns but that's the media for you.
