Eaves was slightly better than Ugwu, he at least worked a little and at times you could see he has the ability, but he was dropping off way too much, his decision making was poor and his movement non-existent. Wroe had a horrendous game, pass completion must have been close to 50% and the ones he did get to a teammate were often uncontrollable. Winfield was woeful, too. Reach clearly has quality about him but again needs to work on his decision making and final ball, but he is at least a threat and does put effort in. Taylor was subdued, Bradshaw looked our biggest threat and Jacobson and Summerfield were, as always, solid. The biggest surprise for me was Mkandawire, who I thought had a solid game despite a torrent of negativity towards him. I also think we saw how important Wildig is, someone who rarely gives it away and keeps the ball moving and the game ticking over from the middle. His creativity was sorely missed as the forwards struggled to get any clear-cut opportunities, with a couple of Jacobson crosses probably our best opportunities aside from Eaves' cut back that JJ just couldn't reach.
I didn't think we were as bad as some people seem to be suggesting on B and A, but there were real signs of worry. Crucially, for me, we are just a couple of centre forwards and dropping Winfield away from being a thoroughly decent side at this level. I still think Turner's the man for this season to keep us up, but if we want to go further then we need a change. I suspect that GT will call it a day at the end of the season; he may well see it as job done if he can leave having moved us from a mid-table League Two side to an established League One team with a core of good young players who can hopefully improve together, and who are we to complain at that return from 4 years? The biggest question is whether there genuinely is money to spend on wages and fees comparable to most other teams in this league, or whether Turner is being asked to do things on the cheap. Sadly, due to the lack of transparency inherent from the top, I'm not sure we'll ever know. It could be that Turner's working miracles on the division's smallest budget for all we know (certainly doesn't look outrageous considering the lack of investment in forwards) or that he's performing miserably having been given a decent license to spend.
One thing is certain, though, and that is that Roland won't be around for too much longer. A few more years and I expect him to stand down, provided that he finds a suitable replacement. Again, he's moved this club forward a lot during his time here (similar to Turner's impact) but, again similarly to GT, seems to have his flaws which prevent him from enabling the club to step forward further or maintain full support of the fan base.
