I'm interested to see some extended highlights because I don't think MOTD the will have enough time. Granted I sit in the SJH stand, But I thought we could have had 5 pens today.

Can anyone clarify?

same view as me, (SJH) thought the ref was very lenient with Stoke's defense

I think the ref took pity in the end. Cabaye foul by Shawcross was nailed on penalty. I think if it had been 1-1, 2-1 it would have been given

By all neutral accounts, Stoke were by far the better side until the ref changed the game in your favour with a couple of shockers..I haven't seen them myself, so will reserve judgement..

I also haven't seen them so I'll reserve judgement here too.

However, it's also slightly unfair to say "by ALL neutral accounts" because not all have said that.

From what I gather the decisions were on the harsh side but were at least in response to incidents where the action could be taken.
You don't always see them given, fair enough, but that doesn't necessarily make them wrong - just bold.

From there Newcastle took advantage and could have been given further penalties apparently...

The referee also changed the game in your favour today, 100% correctly obviously, but still. Sunderland have been overdue a few but we don't normally get them either!

I'm just going by the neutral pundits I have listened to on Sky and on radio..The only place I have heard anyone say that the ref didn't change the game in your favour is on here..

From the BBC page:

RED CARD - Newcastle 0-1 Stoke - Glenn Whelan
Silly boy! Glenn Whelan has already been booked and has a hack at the calves of Yohan Cabaye. There can only be one outcome, a second yellow and a red. Chance now for Newcastle as Stoke boss Mark Hughes joins his midfielder in the stands.

The BBC commentators on 5Live said the same too.

Well if you're going by Sky then they have actually said all the decisions were down to Stoke's indiscipline and the red cards justified.

So yeah, like in your match, the referee without doubt affected the result – it's just less clear cut as to whether he was right.

The only incidents that sound contentious to me in the various reports are the first Whelan booking and a possible penalty to Stoke before our leveller.
We also had penalties not given and frankly however harsh his first might have been, Whelan doesn't have to go and pick up a second.

Unfortunately isolated incidents like these can only be identified as important within the bigger context of the match and how it unfolded.

5-1 scoreline was undoubtedly harsh on Stoke after a good opening 40 minutes, but would they have kept us out with 10 men? Who knows...

Nooo - I'd never do such a thing, and tbf he does seem to try and talk sense and to want genuine banter even when he does talk ****e <laugh>

First time I've seen it. The first booking he kicked the ball away and according to Mark Hughes that was what he was booked for. That's always a booking these days. The second one could have gone either way, but like some of the stoke fans are saying on their forum once he was on a yellow it was a stupid challenge to make. The second red, there was no doubt about at all. Like they said, once the penalty was given he had to go. Tough on Stoke but discipline is part of the game - as both us and our neighbours have found out on occasions.

On second thoughts tho, this does back up your claims that the BIG clubs get an unfair advantage from the refs <whistle>

Not quite sure why you'd make such a statement unless you'd seen the game. I thought you'd watched intently until your last sentence!

The ref clearly seemed to waive away blatant penalty claims, but it's difficult to judge from that distance.

Just watched Match of the day, and even you lot must be embarrassed with the refs bias towards Newcastle....
Shearer even admitted it..

I actually thought the first sending off was harsh. I think a warning for his second yellow would have been enough. He clipped Cabaye. No question. But the ref could have gone and said "look, calm down... one more tackle and your off"

Then the second red was blatant and the ref cannot be blamed for that. It was a pen, it was a goalscoring opportunity and therefore should have been sent off..

Williamson should have had a yellow for handball.....

Our second was out of play.....

BUT: We won 5-1 so no one can say that we didnt deserve the result.

We should have had another pen in reality. But I think the ref bottled it.

And the tackle on Haidara.... should also have been a red.

I do not understand why Stoke decided to lose their control. In all honesty I was concerned (at 11v11) that we would not create any chances.....

But hey hooo!!!!!

Up the toon!
