Sad to hear sad news of the death of David Coleman ,just watched snippets of his commentaries over the years and realised how much he was part of my life regarding sporting moments ,thanks for the memories
As great a commentator as he was, I remember a book called 'Coleman Balls', which was a collection of all his gaffes over the years. One or two I remember were: "He is one of the great unknown champions because very little is known about him." "The front wheel crosses the finish line, closely followed by the back wheel." "The Republic of China: back in the Olympic Games for the first time." "That's the fastest time ever run, but it's not as fast as the world record." "This evening is a very different evening from the morning we had this morning."
One of my favourite David Coleman quotes (other than the 1976 FA Cup Final cited by CBK above) was also from 1976, from the Olympics in Montreal, when Alberto Juanterena won gold in the 800 metres: "...and Juanterena opens his legs and shows his class..." RIP David, you are irreplaceable.
And Southampton go mad... I remember stubbing out my cigarette on my friend's ceiling when Stokesy scored. He, being a Man U fan, was doubly unamused.
Some more: That’s the fastest time ever run – but it’s not as fast as the world record. Don’t tell those coming in the final result of that fantastic match, but let’s just have another look at Italy’s winning goal. He is accelerating all the time. The last lap was run in 64 seconds and the one before that in 62. For those of you watching who do not have television sets, live commentary is on Radio 2. It’s gold or nothing…and it’s nothing. He comes away with the silver medal. Forest have now lost six matches without winning. And here’s Moses Kiptanui – the 19-year-old Kenyan who turned 20 a few weeks ago. I think there is no doubt, she’ll probably qualify for the final. If that had gone in, it would have been a goal.
No it isn't. Your memory is slightly askew, that's all. Today will not be changed because you had a slight brain fade.
