Meh, boats don't feel pain when you whip them.

Neither do the horses. The whips aren't actually supposed to touch but make a snapping noise, but when they do touch they're not designed to hurt, but merely excite the horse. If the horse gets hurt by the whip the jockey gets punished and the whip is examined for fault.

Plus they apparently enjoy their runs out too, so as far as the horse is concerned I'd go along with flat racing but only because the horse likes it a lot. Jump racing I'd ban in a heartbeat. Horses are so easily injured, often fatally so.

I didn't know any of the above, but I've had several conversations with a relative who owns a couple of horses and has been something of a horse whisperer for about 40 years.

Also generally speaking you don't get any boat 'deaths' (or sinkings) at sailing events.

You do, everything carrys risk. Boat deaths are becoming more and more regular due to the sport pushing for more speed etc.

Andrew Simpson got gold in the 2008 Olympics and should have won it in 2012 but was robbed by some Swedes, he died last year training. So it's not an easy sport. Do you remember the oil tanker crash at Cowes in 2011? (TSS will). I knew one of the guys on that, he wasn't the one in charge though fortunately.

The tendancy is for less deaths these days, although they happen [yes Qwerts, I remember], the risk of injury is quite high. People regularly get smacked in the face by booms during tacking or trapped by sheets and halyards [ropes] being hauled in. People going over the side is quite common though with lifejackets this usually isn't a problem unless it's in a high traffic area. I've been thrown over the side twice in 30 years of on/off sailing. Both times were [cough] fun..!

I dunno if anyone noticed, but Banana tried getting a little bit, erm, controversial on Twitter.

"If Hitler was around now, he would be lauded as a hero, prophet, a saviour for man kind, oh wait we've got Obama...same thing"

"I will one day over throw the monarchy in the UK even if I have to disown my ideals to reach a greater good, where further down the road I'll be remembered as a true hero. First we must act democratically. No more royal degenerate chav family"

"So, Nelson Mandela is died :). Bye bye terrorist"

"Wonder what Mandela is doing in hell?"

"truth hurts. Once a terrorist, always a terrorist. Lucifer was waiting for Mandela. They can now live together."

Is he just a not very funny parody?

Hooray. I'm on my phone at the moment and when trying to access the last post in a thread I'm not getting a network connection error. This app works quite well, all-in-all. :)

People who undertake sailing though do so of their own choice and are aware of the risks allowing them to make an informed decision whether they would like to participate or not. The same cannot be said for horses.

Racehorses always look keen and happy as they walk round the ring before races, so suspect they enjoy the racing. It is what they are bred for and trained for after all. Care should be taken about height of jumps though.

There are loads of non-official Star Trek TV episodes, films, radio, books and magazines. People love the genre so much they can't get enough of it. They tend to be uneven in quality.

So they reckon they've found flowing water on the surface of Mars but they can't go check it out because Curiosity isn't sterilised. What a tease.
