    Hi lads,

I'm writing up a little piece on opposition fans views of us given all the changes around the club and Swansea are part of the second edition!

Im not going to post all comments, just the two best/most representative of the majority view for each each question so I'd appreciate the help if you could answer any of the following questions?

    1) What do you make of Roberto Martinez? will he be a success at Everton?

    2) What do you make of our transfer business this summer with the additions of Kone, Joel Robles, Alcaraz and Deulofeu joining the squad?

    3) Where do you think Everton will finish? why?

    4) Which current Everton players would you take in your XI?

    5) Was Roberto Martinez the best choice for Everton FC? if not, who was?

    <cheers>

    1) What do you make of Roberto Martinez? will he be a success at Everton?

He has football principles, not principles (see how after earning his move to the Premier with Wigan he came back and took virtually every member of staff from Swansea, plus Scotland, plus he gazumped us on the Gomez transfer we had lined up.....it could have sunk our club, the club that took him when he was washed up at Chester and gave him the opportunity to manage.....for Wigan for ****'s sake!!!).

Brendan Rodgers took all the credit for the way Swansea played from lazy London centric journalists but it was in fact Martinez who was the architect and put in the hard yards intensively coaching our boys to play a more Spanish style of football.
He recognised that our squad's strengths were technical and creative and he honed that. Many British managers would have said 'we've got guys who can do that stuff so I'll bring in a few who are strong and can head and tackle etc.' (some of our fans at the time felt this).....but Roberto just added more of the same types, bargains as well; Angel Rangel, Dorus De Vries, Ash Williams, Ferrie Bodde, Andrea Orlandi, Jason Scotland, Steven Dobbie and Andrea Orlandi (Loans: Nathan Dyer...who we signed after Martinez left....and Jordi Gomez...who we didn't) to name a few.
The team would NOT play it long in any circumstance, De Vries became our sweeper Keeper, we played 4-5-1 with a target man who plays in others and wingers. All things seen as Rodgers hallmarks but actually put in place by Martinez.
It was very entertaining to watch and games would quite often finish 3-2/4-3 etc.
Our flaw was the defence, specifically set pieces, and I see this was a problem for Wigan also.

    Will he be a success?
I may end up with egg on my face here but I'm going to say NO.
To date his successes are running away with the League 1 title with us and an FA cup win with Wigan....but a cup win wasn't a measure of success at Wigan, staying in the Premiership was, and although he did well to keep them up for a few years he ultimately failed (I doubt we'll see Wigan back in the Premier unless they make it this year). He never addressed those defensive issues.

    The 2 main things against him are;
    1) Changing the formation and style of an already successful team.....he could do this with us in League 1 or Wigan fighting perpetual relegation...people gave him time.
Inevitably it will take the team time to adjust to Roberto's system. Then will come the pressure....which brings me on to
    2) Moyes achieved outstanding things with your team on that budget and that is what Martinez will be measured against....he simply can't go higher than 6th/7th while trying to change the way the team plays....even if Moyes remained and continued evolving the team it would be very difficult to improve league position.
Martinez is on a hiding to nothing.

    2) What do you make of our transfer business this summer with the additions of Kone, Joel Robles, Alcaraz and Deulofeu joining the squad?

Kone - Has a good CV, scoring wherever he's been....but lacked finesse for me last season and isn't getting any younger
Robles - Don't know enough about him but has a good CV for a young keeper.
    Alcaraz - Never been impressed
Deulofeu - I think he's all hype but there we go....even if he takes to the Prem like a duck to water and impresses you wont be having him next year (in those circumstances) so don't see the point.

Overall I'm unimpressed. There's a logic to each of the signings but I don't see them improving your first XI whatsoever.

    3) Where do you think Everton will finish? why?

You should finish 7th....but I'm going to go for 14th and a flirtation with the relegation battle

    4) Which current Everton players would you take in your XI?

Feillani, Baines and Mirrallas/Pienaar....In the squad I'd take; Heitinga, Jagielka, Coleman, Gibson, Barkley, Osman and Anichebe (just picked those who would slot into our first XI without too much disruption....not disrespecting the others as they have played us off the park on more than one occasion and consistently finished higher)

    5) Was Roberto Martinez the best choice for Everton FC? if not, who was?

I can see the logic; He finds bargains, changing the style so he hopefully wont be compared to Moyes (he'll be compared anyway) as a manager trying to play the same way as Moyes would have nowhere to hide if things started to go wrong.

but I don't think a revolution was necessary and would have instead tried to tempt someone like Martin Jol.

    Good luck with the season!

    1) What do you make of Roberto Martinez? will he be a success at Everton?

With martinez you are guaranteed he will give 100% and more.

    2) What do you make of our transfer business this summer with the additions of Kone, Joel Robles, Alcaraz and Deulofeu joining the squad?

Very good signings that martinez will know that they can play the type of football he wants you to play.

    3) Where do you think Everton will finish? why?

A top half finish will be a good first season for martinez while he gets everton to play his brand of football.

    4) Which current Everton players would you take in your XI?

I'm not being funny but i would not swap or replace any of our players this season..

    5) Was Roberto Martinez the best choice for Everton FC? if not, who was?

Absolutely yes, He is a step up from wigan where he was restricted. He is now at a team with potential..

    1) Martinez will only be a success at Everton, if he brings in a defencive coach, as Martinez only knows the offencive game, something we at Swansea learnt the hard way, from his developing the Spanish passing and possession game, we couldn't defend set pieces for love of money under Martinez, it was his Achilles heel, and If it wasn't for the defencive genius of Paulo Sousa, we would still be leaking goals, Sousa trained our back line in how to defend and keep clean sheets, something Martinez simply couldn't do here at Swansea or at Wigan.

    2) Your signings are good in my view, and will help in any transition

    3) I think everton will finish between 15th and 7th.

    4) Kone

    5) Martinez was the best choice in my view, though Zola might have been more fitting given the style of your team.

Well I couldn't have been more wrong.

Martinez has taken a very good team and seems to have improved them...Deulofeu seems to be the real deal also.

Wouldn't surprise me if they beat Arsenal today. Credit where it's due.

    1) What do you make of Roberto Martinez? will he be a success at Everton?

Depends how the transition between Moyes players and Martinez players goes. He botched it big style at Wigan. Be interesting to see how you do without Lukaku when he goes back to Chelsea. P.S. - Don't leave him alone with any club valuables.

    2) What do you make of our transfer business this summer with the additions of Kone, Joel Robles, Alcaraz and Deulofeu joining the squad?

Kone is rubbish. Deulofeu is obvious quality as is Lukaku. Not seen enough of the others.

    3) Where do you think Everton will finish? why?

    Upper mid table.

    4) Which current Everton players would you take in your XI?

    Lukaku. Deulofeu.

    5) Was Roberto Martinez the best choice for Everton FC? if not, who was?

Obviously not the best choice as he'd just relegated Wigan. Seems to be working out at the moment but there's a long way to go.

We're playing them in a couple of weeks. It'll save them coming back and asking again.

It's frightening how quickly Martinez has changed the style and play of Everton. The game against Arsenal today should be a bloody cracker <cracker>

    1) What do you make of Roberto Martinez? will he be a success at Everton? Yes ,He's ambitious and would crawl over his dead mother but he is a good manger and you've got players who are adept at this level , a good combination .

    2) What do you make of our transfer business this summer with the additions of Kone, Joel Robles, Alcaraz and Deulofeu joining the squad? ..well they haven't hindered you have they but I'm not really qualified to say

    3) Where do you think Everton will finish? why? The players seem to play for the manger and with those additions I believe you'll probably pinch Utd's position, now wouldn't that be ironic

    4) Which current Everton players would you take in your XI? , none really , and thats not being disrespectful , I'm happy with our squad and keep them together for a while and I believe we will become established at this level .

    5) Was Roberto Martinez the best choice for Everton FC? if not, who was? Not sure but thats more of a question to yourselves really.
