Obviously my criticism touched a few nerves. It's just that having seen the workings of these organisations from quite close up it is clear that empires get built by people with more interest in self promotion than the public good.Sadly this is the downside of politics.I don't just mean the straightforward party kind but the greasy pole climbing that goes on throughout.

My 92 year old neighbour had a yellow jacketed idiot trying to get him to leave his house. We live in a Flood Zone 2.that is a 1 in 1000 chance of flooding per year. But it is a risk of flooding from further upstream during heavy rain because we are in a river flood plain. How can somebody with such a fundamental misunderstanding of the situation be in charge?

Appreciate what you're saying now but pegging the whole thing as a media circus was a seriously daft thing to say. They were expecting worse that 53 have you tried to move elderly people AFTER the event, trying to get them into boats.

No one was forcibly evacuated better to be over cautious than people dying or rescuers dying.

You know that certainly in North Norfolk the water level was higher than 53?

A huge chunk of the shingle bank at Salthouse is gone, the A149 is still under 3 feet of water.

I'm not saying that maybe there wasn't a touch of being over cautious but that was no bad thing we came so so so close to disaster even Wisbech came within inches of the river breaching the defences.

How do you quantify a 1 in a thousand year event it's a bullshit statistic no one knows when these things could have we had similar events in recent years where the surge missed high tide by an hour or that could've been disaster.

Personally I think you're reacting too far the other way and no one died from being too prepared.

A little 'after the lord mayor's show' but the damage will take months if not weeks to put right.

What's left of one of the seafront burger / hot dog caravans - the other one has vanished out to sea without trace! May turn up in Clacton :-(

That is so sad, the only small consolation is the lack of casualties!

Not only was my mate's beach cafe wrecked, when he met NNDC officials yesterday to assess the damage, he found he had also been looted.

That is absolutely DESPICABLE. How anyone in this country could stoop so low is beyond belief.

Just seen this comment by the head of news on BBC James Harding - "In addition to that, there's a lot of news that's rolling, you're seeing President Obama come out and make comments, David Cameron comes out to make comments. The BBC, and only the BBC, managed to get former president FW de Klerk.

"But we are probably talking about the most significant statesman of the last 100 years and a man who has defined freedom, justice, reconciliation, forgiveness."
When asked if more reaction to Mandela could have been put online rather than on the main news bulletin to allow for more weather coverage, Mr Harding said: "I completely take your point about the weather, what's happening in people's communities matters enormously.
"We'd been rolling weather coverage from early in the day, particularly when the storms were at their strongest. Had we seen real breaking news on the weather which meant we had to inform people immediately, we would have done so."

I still feel that more time should have been dedicated to the flood problems!!!

I know it wasn't to the scale of the Philippines but when do you ever see whip rounds going round to help people out here who have suffered.

It's all well and good banging on about insurance but for some for whom it's a choice between heating and food they can hardly afford insurance especially when it's unrealistically priced for some.

Our insurance is potentially expensive we live in Cley on holt Road which is on the flood plain (used to be the harbour back in the day) yet we live on top of a hill but try explaining that to insurance companies....

I'd donate to anything that was to feed or help flood victims get back on their feet.

I see dickhead Cameron was in Wells today where there was minimal flooding due to very good defences. Be nice if he'd come along to Cley, Salthouse and Kelling where the sea came in and flooded the coast Road, partly due to the fact since at least 2007 the environment agency has been in "managed retreat" which basically means as defences are breached they don't get repaired.

Could that be why dc didn't come here???

I do not envy the people responsible for managing the coastal defences of Norfolk. Very much fighting a losing battle along certain stretches, and improving the defences of one area can be very much to the detriment of somewhere further along the coast.

I think the defences they've put in place at Sea Palling must have had a detrimental effect on Walcott and Hemsby for them to suffer such devastation.

Rich 44 - you have my sympathy, as insurance companies only look at post codes!

    Walcott always cops it.

Some insurers are more sensible and realise that some numbers here are safer than others, others not so much, we're currently insured with coop they let us renew each year but if I ever cancel it they wouldn't insure this post code again.

Lovely to see some fund raising going on.

The coast Road cleared of water over the weekend, nndc have been down there today clearing it. A149 still closed but should reopen soon.
