Points seem to be a direct reflection of rep, though I thought you got points for posting, to be honest.

Rep and points aren't connected. I think I get points when people post in the music thread as it was my OP - and it has nearly 17,000 replies. Not sure though?
Rep makes up a big chunk of points. If you go to your profile and then select the Experience tab, then it gives you a breakdown. My rep makes up virtually all of mine.

No, neither do I. I assumed that they were to do with posting and creating threads, but the match with rep seemed a bit coincidental to me.
