But how often do solid FB performances make headlines?

BAE is a better left back than Dawson is centre back, yet one is a 'hero' and the other was always criticised.

Benny is actually the only player I follow on Twitter, no homo, but I cried when he went out on loan.

    No he isn't.

Benny was good, but predictable. He could be harried into making a mistake either when doing his litle spins, or playing a ball to the keeper.

He was good when he had an outlet in Bale, and could constantly feed the ball to him, but did not suit our system and was poor last year.

Dawson is a very good defender, his long balls out are usually very very good, and he usually gets his head on balls in the air. My preference would be Kaboul, however i'm not sure his knees are up to it.

In all honesty we all know Benny would not have troubled Cole, Evra, Clichy or even gibbs on current form. We need someone better and if (it's a big IF) we were to sign someone of Coentrao's quality with Rose as back up we would be giant step closer to being a top 4 quality team.

    Cheers tots.

I was a big fan of his, and would say he is the best LB i've seen. Certainly the most consistant, but he wasn't without his flaws and I spent enough time defending him (along with Gomes!).

I think poeple's opinions of Daws are quite polar on here. Some slate him, and some think he is the bee's knees.

I think he is a very good defender, solid and reliable but is not muscular enough, and his lack of pace lets him down - which is why he is not playing for England as he is just as good as Cahil and Jags in his defensive ability imo. (and why i'd have Kaboul as first choice in an ideal world)

I,ve seen quite a few good L/Bs in my time, and for me Benny did'nt measure up imo,it's nothing personal,i like the guy, just not the risky things that have cost us needlessly

If mistakes are all you want to see, that is all you will see. As has been pointed out many times before, other players that have made mistakes are not criticised to anywhere near the same extent, thus giving the impression that BAE made more than he actually did. I therefore don't think your comment about vital goals in vital games is true, and if there are a couple of examples I am certain we could attribute the same (and probably more goals, more mistakes) to other players.

I think the problem with Benny's mistakes is that they often came as a result of his litle turns, or poor passes back to the keeper.

If a player makes a mistake whilst trying to do something a) predictable b) un-necesary it does stick in peoples minds.

Much like Gomes' rolling around, or errors. His record was not disimilar to Friedel, but becuase the yank is solid (if un-specatacular) you can build on that.

Tots, Who have you seen us have that was better? - I have followed Spurs since mid-90's so I don't really have a strong selection to choose from!

Really all I can think of would be:

    Bale
    Young pyo-Lee
    Ziege
    Benny

Same here for the amount of time. In that time the best 3 i think were:
    Benny
    Edman
    Young pyo-Lee

Are you saying all LB's since the double team are better than Benny?

The best left back I have ever seen at Spurs in my time, going back to the late 70s was Chris Hughton. I remember when watching him defend that nobody was ever going to get past him, and I can't remember anyone that did! He would always come away with the ball.

I like non-conformists they brighten up life.

BAE is an entertainer as well as a good player and entertainment should not be dismissed lightly. Take note AVB.

Don't think QPR fans will be too pleased with his defending for the goal there, didn't even attempt to close down the scorer.
