there is a difference between being a 'bit twitchy' and wanting the manager out if we don't win handsomely on saturday! if we beat west ham on saturday and move up to say, 15th position, will we still need to panic and sack him? 4 of our 6 defeats this season were all expected. the other games reap rewards of P6 W2 D2 L2 - now we can show concern about the fact that we are 18th and we can show concern that we didn't get results against a couple of the teams that we probably should have beaten on the day but is that really reason for a dismissal?

no, it isn't. its a long season. we have a long stretch of games where if we can win a few, we will be in a good position come game 35. we are more than capable of winning games. many of our players have not played as well as last season. again, room for improvement and its the kind of improvement that we know they are capable of. those final four games are not write-offs anyway. we may not have had any success against them so far but that doesn't mean we won't later.

you might not like me stating that patience is required but its common sense in this case. i don't see the need to foam at the mouth every time we lose a game or get a thumping and i'm well aware that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

as a serious question to those who think hughton should leave, either in the near future if things don't pick up or right now, today (i realise this isn't going to happen but bare with me), what is it you are looking for from our new manager? it is apparent we are all having problems finding a name of a suitable manager, but what characteristics do they need to have? how would they differ from hughton?

Wishful thinking methinks - look at Poyet at Sunderland!!! OK, won one and lost one - IMO, it will take a few weeks to turn things around there.

I think the major issue with CH at the moment is feeding the strikers, he didn't ever really inspire Holt to goal greatness last season, so far he hasn't done much to inspire or feed RVW and Hooper.

    The new incumbant would
    a) get the team to outplay villa and cardiff at home and unluckily only get a point
    b) set the team up to play well against Soton and win with a goal by an improving England under 21 player
    c) go for an equaliser at the Emirates and risk losing more heavily but show adventure
    d) manage to attract quality overseas players to carrow road and be generally very astute in the transfer market
    e) be tactically aware enough to win away at Stoke
    f) be unlucky away at Hull
    g) during the transition from being defensively oriented to more attacking get it wrong a few times, as would be expected and incur the wrath of fans

    ok, so far we have:

    • praise our own players more in public (i have no interest in this one myself. as long as he praises players in private why does it matter if he praises our opponents? every single manager does it)

    • win more matches (ah, the magic answer! unfortunately no guarantees with this one, no matter who we get in, and realistically we will often lose more games than we win each season we are in this league)

    • address goal scoring issue (i think we all want this one sorted - maybe bringing back the goal music will help?) ;)

    any more?

I for one have never said that CH hasn't done well for us but he does need to address one fundamental weakness in the team at the moment, the goal drought. He still doesn't seem to be able to get the feed to the strikers right, it does seem worse this season. In my opinion if he addresses this we could finish in a similar placing as last season and more importantly he will keep his job.

He should have signed a decent CAM in the summer but unfortunately this didn't emerge.

    ^ This 100% ^
Especially the first para. While we're causing the opposition defence problems by good approach play and our striker (s?) occupying their back line, we're not under the cosh at the other end of the pitch <ok>

This would enable Howson to show his true colours in the CAM role that seems to bring out the best in him, thereby addressing the second para as well, to a large extent!

To address the issue with not feeding our striker/strikers, how do people think we would fare with Elmander being played behind the striker more often? He's experienced and surely has a good level of positional nous - maybe this would free up a bit of space for RvW/Hooper.
I confess though, I'm not entirely sure which two midfielders I would play in the middle of the park. Would we be entirely too vulnerable if we played Fer and Howson, who can both pick a pass if the space is there.

howson has scored 4 goals in his last 12 games. would this not suggest he is getting more out of him?

we all know that scoring goals is our major issue under hughton. i don't know whether a change of manager would suddenly reap rewards on that front. in my opinion, this issue is the only really valid grumble fans can have about his tenure at the club. we simply haven't scored enough goals. there are minor grumbles but only one major one.

Indeed, but only after deploying him on the right flank and as a holding mid before that productive 12 game spell?

right flank? you mean one game at hull? that's pretty strange to pick up on one game. and he's never played as a holding midfielder. he played deeper than he should have, no question, but he's never played as the holding midfielder. it does seem that facts are formed from myth when talking about hughton...!

Have a read of this. It would seem that some people may not agree with the bit about Laudrup.

interesting stuff, although i don't think there's any argument to say that laudrup hasn't done a decent job there, even if this season is proving more tricky.

i chatted to a swans fan the other day about shelvey. he can't stand him! i feel the same, never understood the fuss with him, yet he still seems to get raved about by the media
