Raheem Sterling has been told by Brendan Rodgers he still has much work to do to become a Liverpool regular.

Sterling enjoyed a meteoric start to his Reds career last season, making 36 senior appearances and winning his first England cap.

But the talented youngster has struggled this season to reclaim his first-team place since recovering from the thigh injury which brought a premature end to his last campaign.

Brendan Rodgers claims Sterling and fellow teenage winger Jordon Ibe need to show the right attitude, but that they have time on their side.

The Kop chief told the Liverpool Echo: "Jordon is only 17 years of age and even Raheem is only 18. We can't forget that.

"We don't want to rush these young players' development, even though we want young players to come through and we want to put them in the first team. We've done that over the course of the last year or so.

"But it is also important to understand that it comes at different stages for some players.

"Look at Raheem's progress and what he's done in the last year or so. He has propelled himself from a youth team and reserve player to an England player.

"But they still have a long way to go in their professional careers and at this stage we're just looking to manage that and make sure we nurture that for the future.

"They understand that if you are focused and playing well, then you will play.

"But in the modern game it can be difficult for young players to break through.

"Over the last year or so they have seen that they are going to get an opportunity and if they can devote their life, be professional and take the opportunities when they come then they are going to have an excellent chance.

"You just have to give them the time and understanding. There are not going to be too many 17 or 18-year-olds ready for the first team, but we want them to be at 20 or 21."

Sounds like they both thought they made it. Need to buck up as with Suso coming back, Aspas not injured, LA getting minutes here and there, and possibly the arrival of more wingers. They need to start to take this seriously!

It wasn't his attitude, he was mine (the older ones may get that)

That's the problem with young players in today's game, they think they're the dogs bollocks after playing well for 5 games.

Comments on an OnT thread. Well done all. <applause>

I will say this, if they got the finger out, it would save us a lot of money to strengthen elsewhere: DM, LB, FWD, AM.

um, that's dfferent, i've watched him for the last couple of years in the reserves and i knew then he was going to make it at United.

He hasn't made it yet! Pacheco, Coates, Pauletta for us got in the first team but didn't make it. All you have to do is look at Macheda to see you haven't made it in the team due to a few goals!!!

Januzaj is a completely different player to Macheda.

He can be completely different but he still has not made it yet. The players I mentioned for Liverpool you have defenders and forwards, different players. Just saying Matt be careful, gotta be patient and hope the players have the right mindset.

Did he come from Anderlecht or something this Jacuzzi?

He came from Mrs Januzaj I believe.

We all have to be careful not to expect too much of Raheem. He is 18 - it's an oddity that he's had a full season in the first team already. He still needs the same patience as he grows, as he would have had we not been so short of options last season.

This, i'm not putting any pressure on him, would be unfair, just let him flourish and play his game.
