CH is the kind of manager you bring in for a long term appointment. No maybe people find him boring because he doesn't talk rubbish in the press, maybe he doesnt come in all guns blazing. But he will gradually over time put together a good team, playing good football. Everyone always wants a quick fix with anything these days and expects immediate results. CH won't offer than but nor will sacking him and bringing in some average manager. Everyone is very supportive of how we have gradually got ourselves out of debt and delighted the club is becoming more financially sustainable, surviving for the long term. Not just spending huge amounts of money, winning 1 trophy then dropping into the lower leagues as has been the case with several cubs who our fans have highly criticised. Yet when it comes to the manager people are not interested in the long term future. Its just a case of we are not getting results so sack him! Pointless! If we want to grow as a club we need some stability, especially as we dont have millions to spend by PL standards. Things are improving slowly and if we stay up that should be seen as progress.
remember when david moyes first took over at everton? they nearly went down a couple of times, but they stuck by him, backed him and slowly over time they progressed. they were built from the back too. we aren't as big a club as everton but the principal is the same.
agreed, it takes into account the start we have had. the stats are interesting - in the last 5 seasons 7 out of the 15 clubs who have been bottom 3 on halloween have gone on to get relegated. so, roughly speaking, we have a 50% chance of staying up.
Say no more. He may be a very good manager, I'm not entirely convinced he's not potentially brilliant, but one thing I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion is that he's onto a hiding for nothing here. As I said last night: (1) I would take Jol if he is fired by Fulham first. I'm not sure how others feel about him, but I'm convinced he would be just about the best we have available (2) I tentatively agree with suggestions of Hoddle, but I think it would be a risk (3) I wouldn't mind Zola, though I suspect he wouldn't want to come (4) My ideal would be Phillipe Montanier, but he also probably wouldn't come and he would be a huge risk. Likewise with Juan Ignacio Martinez, but both may have the language barrier which is probably insurmountable given our squad.
It is and it isn't. I think they're right that the matches we've played so far don't tell the true picture, but equally that stat highlights how good we were against the top teams and, as we have seen so far this season, getting lots of points against them is something we just can't rely on.
Martin Jol would be an interesting one, i quite rate him. he's taken on a tough job at Fulham with an ageing squad and a low budget in terms of transfer fees.
where is montanier now, is he a free agent? edit. don't know why i didn't just look it up! he's at rennes
i really wouldn't want martin jol. its not that i don't think he's a good manager, i just think it wouldn't be an improvement so what's the point? why change something for the sake of change?
Well, that's not why I would have Jol. Ultimately, it's a results game and if Hughton needs to go, he'll need to go. That's the bottom line - whether you think he needs to go because he's a terrible manager or whether you think he needs to go because the fans and/or the players aren't with him, it doesn't alter the fact that he needs to go. We are rapidly moving towards that situation. It's not unarrestable nor irreversible, but it's happening. If Hughton has to go, and Jol is available, then I'd take him. It's not change for change's sake then.
i don't know enough about martinez to say one way or the other. montanier did really well with sociedad but again, i'm not overly familiar with him. hoddle gets talked about with every job that comes up - why has he never been given any of them? i like his ideals but there must be something glaring to owners that put them off him. zola is risky. his watford team play nice football but his job is pretty 'cushty' down there with the owners. i like him as a person but do i think he's a good manager? not sure - he'd probably be near the top of most peoples list but he'd be 50/50 for me.
Yes, so he might be tempted as Stade Rennais aren't all that more attractive than us, I don't think. I don't know. Risky, but his pedigree is fantastic and I think it would be exciting. It might bring more hassle than it's worth though because, if he has a great season, he'll probably be rapidly elsewhere and we'd be back to square one (though admittedly on the back of a great season).
Jo; is a very average manager. Would be no improvement on CH. Would just be the managerial merry-go-round, same managers getting similar jobs then eventually failing all the time. Why do you think he would be and improvement?
Both are bright, European, sparks. Risky, though, Martinez obviously more so. Agree with all your other points, within personal preference. Their the same reasons I'm a long way from blown away by any feasible options.
i'm a big fan of german football rob so i'm more ofay with the styles and abilities of the managers over there than in spain. i think there's a bigger culture shock moving from spain than germany too. options are certainly limited!
I didn't say he would be an improvement. I just said I'd take him if Hughton had to go. I'm not talking comparisons. The "managerial merry-go-round" is here to stay unfortunately and a club of our size will inevitably be stuck on it with our fanbase. As soon as a fantastic manager comes in, he'll probably be off soon and therefore we'll be back on that roundabout. The only reason I think he might be an improvement is that he wouldn't be Hughton. But then we do have an odd fanbase so I'm sure one section would rapidly campaign to get him out, maybe because Holland is too close to Norfolk, something like that seems to be a valid reason in some people's eyes. Other questionable points - we have a Dutch contingent, he has good experience, a good transfer window record, etc. But I'm not here to sell Jol; I don't particularly want him. I just think he might be the best available alternative if the time comes.
True, that's why I prefer Montanier, who at least has French experience at all levels. None of the German managers look as available.
