A police investigation into alleged offensive chanting by members of the armed forces at a Rangers match has not led to any prosecutions.

The club hosted an Armed Forces Day event at their home match with Stenhousemuir at the end of last month.

The allegations arose after videos by fans posted on viral video sharing site YouTube appeared to show soldiers in uniform interacting with fans while singing about proscribed loyalist organisations.

Footage of the incident also appeared to show chants against IRA paramilitary Bobby Sands who died in a hunger strike in HM Prison Maze in County Down, Northern Ireland in 1981.

Police Scotland and the Army confirmed they had launched investigations into the match that took place on September 28.

A police spokeswoman said: "Following a full inquiry by Police Scotland, a report on the circumstances was submitted to the procurator fiscal and the military.

"At this time the inquiry is completed. However, if new information does come to light, it will of course be acted upon."

The Crown Office confirmed it had received a report on the circumstances surrounding the incident, but this did not relate to possible prosecutions so it had not opened any proceedings as a result of it.

A spokesman said: "We have not as yet received a prosecution report in respect of any specific individuals, and as such there are currently no ongoing proceedings in relation to this incident."

The Ministry of Defence said disciplinary action could be taken by individual commanding officers against personnel in response to the incident, but it was unable to confirm if that had happened in relation to the incident.

Am MoD spokeswoman said that around 400 members of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army and Royal Air Force across Scotland took part in the day at Ibrox, which is similar to events held by other football clubs and sporting groups.

She added: "As far as we are concerned, Rangers want to carry on with them (the Armed Forces Days) and we want to carry on being a part of them."

They didn't prosecute British soldiers for murdering Irishmen so they were not likely to prosecute them for singing about it.
