Just been to see the peerless Johnny Marr. Introducing the song 'Lockdown' from his new album, he mentioned the original Crap Towns book and how it made him angry because it just seemed to be a list of the towns he went to on holiday, as a kid. Having told the author to '**** off, you pompous prick' he explained that he'd written Lockdown in response.
 
Sorry to go back to a post on page 2, but live near Macclesfield and it's a nice town for its size, and quite like Stockport too.

There's a lot of knobs in Macc & when Astrazeneca uproots to Cambridge it'll deteriorate rapidly. Stockport's suffering but both are preferable to the Stokee Clayheaded Potbonkers
 
Won't alderley Edge be worse affected with the closure? only been through stoke on train and the conductor really hated stoke - as was obvious with his announcements

Johnny Marr is awesome, and he is why the Smiths are brilliant.

Just thought I'd put that out there.

Not entirely true is it? He's 50% of why The Smiths were brilliant and even he would say that himself. Otherwise why has neither he nor Stephen Patrick achieved anything as extraordinary since. Of course Joyce and Rourke were largely interchangeable with ten thousand session musicians.

For the record The Smiths are my favourite band ever.

Less effete version of the Cure, or/and a Joy Division-lite?

A handful of good songs and the rest so-so.

Having such a naff fanbase hindered them.

Bit harsh on the rhythm section of the greatest band ever! Johnny Marr has said that Andy Rourke's playing on The Queen is Dead couldn't have been achieved by anyone else. Even a bile filled Moz got them both playing on his first post-Smiths recordings. Morrissey / Marr where undoubtedly the creative force but Rourke and Joyce made a real contribution to the overall sound.

There is a light that never goes out.

In danger of highjacking this thread I'm interested to hear other people's favourite Smiths records. It always astounds me how few overlook Strangeways Here We Come and I'm in complete agreement with both Mozz and Marr that is really is them at the height of their powers. It is simply peerless.
