    Just released from today's echo...

Sunderland target trio By Chris Young
    Published on Tuesday 7 June 2011 11:00

PETER Crouch, Roman Pavyluchenko and Charles N’Zogbia will become Sunderland’s top targets – IF Jordan Henderson is sold to Liverpool.

Sunderland remain determined to keep hold of Henderson and will only let the 20-year-old leave the Stadium of Light for a mega-money bid.

Liverpool are yet to make an acceptable offer to the Black Cats and talk of the deal happening before Henderson jets off to the European U21 Championships tomorrow is far too premature.

But Liverpool appear dogged in their determination to land Henderson and showed with their pursuit of Andy Carroll during January that they are prepared to pay huge fees to land the country’s brightest young English talent.

Henderson is unlikely to be able to reject Liverpool’s advances either, with Kenny Dalglish hopeful of securing at least a top four finish next season.

The potential loss of Henderson would represent a significant blow on Wearside, with the England international the star graduate of the club’s academy.

It would also raise questions among supporters of Sunderland’s ambition, coming just six months after the departure of Darren Bent to Aston Villa.

But if Liverpool meet Sunderland’s £20million-plus asking price, it would allow Black Cats boss Steve Bruce to make significant reinforcements to a squad already threadbare due to injuries and the departure of loanees Danny Welbeck, John Mensah and Nedum Onuoha.

Bruce was facing an uncertain budget with a spending spree by no means on the cards.

But £20m would allow him to land top target N’Zogbia plus a proven goalscorer in the mould of Crouch or Pavyluchenko.

Wigan winger N’Zogbia has been on Bruce’s wishlist ever since he arrived at the Stadium of Light two years ago, but Sunderland have baulked at the Latics’ £12m asking price.

Funds from the sale of Henderson would allow Sunderland to land the French winger though and pip rivals Newcastle United to the signature of their former player.

Crouch and Pavyluchenko are also on Bruce’s radar, with Spurs looking to cut costs this summer after their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Sunderland may be unwilling to pay £10m for 30-year-old Crouch. But the Black Cats held talks with the England hitman two years ago, prior to his move from Portsmouth, and Bruce remains a fan.

Pavyluchenko has had a more chequered time at White Hart Lane, although the 29-year-old has still notched 20 goals in 48 starts for Spurs.

The barrier to either move would be the duo’s wages at Spurs, but Sunderland would hope the prospect of regular first-team football would be a factor in persuading them to move to the North East.

Sunderland continue to be linked with Manchester United pair Wes Brown and Darren Gibson too, while the Black Cats are intent on landing out-of-contract duo Seb Larsson and Keiren Westwood.

H Sunderland duo Asamoah Gyan and Cristian Riveros will be in action for their countries tonight.

Gyan will line up for Ghana against South Korea while Riveros is set to start for Paraguay against Bolivia.

Reading in the paper earlier mate that after a discussion with Nzogbia, Martinez has agreed that he will only sell him to a club in the champions League. Nzogbia reportedly said he was tired of relegation battles and wanted to be experiencing the bigger matches.

It then went onto say that both Liverpool and SAFC were chasing him but that obviously neither would be playing Champs league next season. I think it would take a stupid bid now to get him, I think we've missed the boat with his signing.

After reading this on SSN Sunderland need to really show some ambition if we are going to sign N`Zog.

TBH Players like Bothroyd & Vaughan will not be good enough for us to get Zog.

Players like Crouch, Pav & Samba will show we mean business.

....Wigan star Charles N'Zogbia says he wants to join an ambitious club who will be challenging for honours.

The Latics winger is currently with the French squad after he was handed a recall by Laurent Blanc, after a brilliant end to the Premier League season.

Now N'Zogbia is gearing up for the summer which he is hoping will include a big move.

The former Newcastle star has been strongly linked with a return to Tyneside, with North East rivals Sunderland and Liverpool are also thought to be very keen.

But N'Zogbia has warned any suitors that he wants to make sure he joins a side challenging for silverware.

"It is true that over the last two years at Wigan, our goal has been to stay in the Premier League and it is tough and it has been a bit detrimental to me," he told Sport France.

"It is a bit of a disadvantage to me, but I always give my best for whichever team I am with.

"I have one-year left on my contract, and after two-years I think the coach and the owner are satisfied with what I have produced.

"Now they know that I want to sign with a bigger club, with bigger goals who can play in Europe and also help me with France.

"I said to them that if I am still at Wigan then I would give them 200 per cent, as I am loyal to the club.

"But they have opted for a transfer and I hope it will happen under good conditions and that everyone will be happy."

    Ambitious
N'Zogbia underlined that he wants to join a club with big ambition and admitted that he wanted to stay in Premier League, but he would consider moves to France, Spain or Italy too.

"A big club for me is one that plays in Europe, and which has the goal of winning the title - that may be in England, France, Spain or Italy," he continued.

"I left France at the age of 18, and I have been in the Premier League for six or seven years and I have evolved in the Premier League, I am familiar with that and I have learned the customs of that league and I feel good.

"So it is the Premier League first for me, after that France, Spain or Italy - I have seen them on television and it would be a new challenge."

I would prefer us going a bit harder for Welbeck than Crouchy as Crouch doesnt tie in with Quinn's startegy of getting in youthful players who will not loose money. Only snag with this is if Henderson is going for £20 million then Fergie will want similar for Welbeck.

We may be able to get N'zogbia and Welbeck witht he money we make for Henderson, which would be like swapping 3 goals a season (Henderson) for 20 goals a season (N'zog & Welbeck)

Don't want Crouch or Pav, both good player's but no sell on value. What happen's when we spunk all that money on player's winding down their career?
In 3 year's time we will be left with 2 old striker's that nobody want's, while Liverpool will still have a England international coming into his prime.

Totally agree with that mate. Then we could get Larsson to fill in on the RW. I'd take Paveluchenko. I saw a stat saying he has 20 goals in 48 starts for Spurs although he's never really had long spells in the first team. Crouch just doesn't seem right for me. He'd be on big wages, a hefty transfer fee for a 30 year old and let's not forget he turned us down for the money at Spurs. We want players committed to the club not one just looking to fill their wallets.

That is a likely set up wether you like it or not, only thing is I feel Sess has shown signs he has more impact through the middle instead of on the wing but there is always that option to play him through the middle to mix it up through a game.

The key thing in that set up is our fullbacks, hopefully Bardo will be on the right and a new left back to link up with our new left winger (Hopefully Zog)

Got to get a proper left back in! I've been saying that for yonks. Although with N'Zogbia on the left, the need for a proper left back would be reduced.

I think we still need a proper left back Keano, its much harder for a right footer to curl the ball upto the left winger than it is for a lefty. I just hope with all this need for strikers & midfielders he doesnt forget about the left hand side, which has been poor all season and slows our attacks down with all the cut backs onto their right foot
