If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. So England team? Simple task, pick your all time best England team.

Ignore all the differences between era's, fitness, speed, rules, equipment, and hype of course just your eleven and no subs or alternatives only 11 picks allowed.

Here's mine:

Gordon Banks

Roy Goodall Billy Wright Bobby Moore Ashley Cole

Stanley Mathews Paul Gascoigne Glen Hoddle Johnny Haynes
Teddy Sherringham Jimmy Greaves

Astonishing how few caps Hoddle got. Should have built the team around him. 44 caps or something like that - Glen Johnson has more!

In truth Banks, Moore, Edwards, Greaves, Wright and Charlton should all be in my team, but I barely remember Greaves, Charlton Moore and Banks and I never saw Edwards or Wright, so my team is mid 70's to date. I would go with technical skills, no bruisers in defence or midfield.

Shilton

Stevens (Rangers/Everton)
Walker
King
Le Saux

Hoddle
Bell
Gascoigne

Waddle
Brooking

Lineker

going by players ive seen.

Shilton

Neville. King Butcher Pearce

Anderton Robson Platt. Waddle

Gazza

Lineker

Some of my selections are based on what I've read/ heard/ seen clips of as unfortunately I weren't around in their days.

Banks
G. Neville, Moore, *King, Cole
Hoddle, Gazza, Platt
Shearer, Linekar, Greaves

*I've chosen King as even though he only got about 20 odd caps, he's still the best CB I've ever seen live. Though if I had to choose someone based on actual England form, then begrudgingly I'm going to say Judas. I hate him but going by talent and performances, he was a superb centre back. If he wasn't such an un-loyal ****er, we could've possibly seen the greatest English CB pairing in history with him and Ledley.

In truth I think the defenders would all be from the modern era because the skill levels appear to be much higher now.

Shilton ;

Armfield, Edwards, Moore, Sansom;

Finney, R.Charlton, Robson, Matthews;

Greaves, Lineker

That team would get slaughtered by England's U21 side today, Little Luke.

Can we all, at least agree, that no Arsenal player would feature in an "All Time Best" England side?

No-one will disagree with that surely. Who is there best shout? Adams? Lol

Edit - Sorry HIAG, "their". My bad.

Not if modern players had the old players kit, diet, training etc etc or, more to the point, the old players had modern day benefits.

This is always the problem in comparing players from different eras. Edwards was a beast, Finney ran rings round people and scored for fun, Greaves was razor sharp in the box etc. You have to assume that these players would have transferred their skills to the modern game and benefited from all the things associated with the progression of the game.

the OP does say to ignore that ****.

That doesn't take away from the fact i don't know who half your team are luke :)

No worries, sir. At least you have shown a willingness to better yourself. There is a certain poster who seems to take delight in making an art of his ignorance. It warms the cockles of my heart to observe that you are not one of those.

Luke had Kenny Sansome, so I guess we can't. SOS flirted with the idea of including Judas <grr>
