Really? We'd surely have heard about this if it was true, but it's not been mentioned at all, has it?

Also it's not like we are desperate for that money to pay debts etc. What would we do, sign a £25m player with the profits... and pay him what per week?

Yes, and as such, it's not the end of the world. It is just, as I say, a little surprising.

All it will take is an injury (or suspension) or two, and our attacking options will be threadbare. Mayuka was on the bench vs WBA, was he not?

He was.

What baffles me is that we show the ambition in bringing in big-time players, and yet build a squad with a serious question mark at fullback and minimal wide options. A little depth would be nice!

Agreed. If that Facebook comment can be trusted I suppose he's asked to leave on loan so he can play somewhere. He may have been on the bench this season but he's clearly not seen as an option we want to use (he's got very little playing time under Poch) and is primarily a striker, although he can play wide. As I say, I would have liked us to bring in an option out wide but I wanted that before Mayuka left.

Very pleased for mayuka he should get some game time and improve quite a bit. I think the diamond will actually work very well once we get our best fullbacks in. I hope its more of a 4-3-1-2 than a diamond and if so we will be able to fit in our best players i feel. We havent had a proper wide man since the ox and i think the formation change is vital to incoporate botu lambett and osvaldo.

Brilliant window from us, be good to get rid of some others for their sake as well

Promise you that we will never see Mayuka in a Saints shirt again.

So add Mayuka to the Forren dud pile of bad signings.

But what happens when one of them gets injured again? Shaw in particular picked up a string of niggles last year.

As Schad has previously said, if we're not going to sign a winger then at the very least we need to strengthen our backup fullback options. At present, make no mistake, I am sure we'll be seeing some more PL starts for Fox this season....

Where did you read that? On here a month ago when we discussed it in great detail? <doh>

Laugh all you like, without that up-front payment we'd most probably not have a club at all, so frankly that's worth more than £20m to me.

Sorry, not keeping up that much with the Saints board ever since my threads got deleted. Dutch state television came with the report.

On the bright side, I suppose that we'll now get an answer to the age-old question: how many central midfielders can you get on the pitch at one time?

I'm sure plenty will disagree but I feel like we're very light in wide areas now. Not only have we signed nobody in that position but we have let three go! Puncheon was a settled first-team player, Mayuka was a decent backup and looked to be growing into the side and De Ridder was admittedly bobbins but at least has first-team experience. Now (apart from Lallana, Ramirez and Rodriguez, none of whom are really wingers) we have Isgrove and Rowe, who promising as they are, are not at a stage where they will be able to step in and play 20 first-team games like Puncheon would have.

Overall I'm delighted with the signings we have made but this apparent mission to rid the club of anyone who can play on the wing is puzzling.

another leftback would be very handy and was absolutely necessary before chambers showed he was up to it. I would be happy for clyne to play leftback and chambers to play on the right if shaws injured. If both first choice are injured we will be significantly weakened but we will be alright. A better midfield performance on saturday and i dont think we would have decried the lack of width so much.

Or is Rowe ready?

If he is on the cusp, you'd have thought that we'd have given him more than a short cameo in the cup game, no?

It's not like having both injured is an improbability; they're injured now, and we quite frankly got shredded on both flanks by Norwich.
