I disagree. For the attacking 3 players in the 4-2-3-1, the only first team players we really have now are Gaston, Rodriguez, and Lallana. JWP and Lambert are tenuous as to whether that is their preferred position, and Guly and Mayuka are generally not seen as first team players. For me, we could use 1 more attacking midfielder/winger, such as Moses. When injuries or suspensions hit us, we could be a little threadbare in that area, especially since Puncheon left.
Let's have a look at what you claim is a large amount of players that can play in the "three" behind Lambert: Osvaldo Rodriguez Lallana Ramirez Davis Wow. That sure is a lot of players there, Olly.
So two more. The point still remains. We don't exactly have too many players in that position. Besides, we need to replace Puncheon.
You're missing James Ward-prowse from that list, that gives you 6 players to cover 3 positions. It's more than enough. Nice attempted cover up of your unnecessary smart-arse outburst though.
I completely disagree with you. You need more than one back up for a position that uses up so much energy, and Ward-Prowse isn't exactly a natural attacking midfielder. Plus, how many players do we have that have the same playing style as Moses? I count one - Mayuka, and he's no great-shake.
You can even add Mayuka (who was excellent last night) and Guly to the list. That gives you eight players competing for three places.
I too am happy with our squad, as is Mauricio. But when an opportunity comes along, you take it. There's a hole where Puncheon's direct playing style used to be.
Ok, fair enough. We'll see how Mayuka performs when he plays in the attacking midfield position. Guly, good player and certainly one that adds competition. But you don't turn down a player of Moses's quality when a chance to bag them comes along. He'd be challenging for a starting place, which Mayuka and Guly aren't and most probably won't.
Basically, what you seem to be saying, is you should only add to your squad if you're in need of a player there. That's a rather backwards mindset. The squad will only get better if you add players of improved quality that push players out of the squad who can't compete with their ability. It's what we've been doing since League One - otherwise we wouldn't have signed players like Wanyama.
I disagree again - there seemed to be no plan to get rid of Puncheon, and all accounts point towards his departure as one entirely of his own choice. He left due to family problems, not because we'd replaced him.
We have Dean Hammond, so why did we sign Wanyama? Waste of money. Out of all the players mentioned who can play on the wing, how many of them are actually wingers? I make it none. Puncheon was, though.
Not really, we signed Wanyama because we only had two players who could naturally play that position. For the position Moses plays we have at least 6 who would have that as their preferred position.
Listen to pochettino's interview, he says quite clearly that Puncheon made a professional decision after we signed Osvaldo to leave.
We had Davis, Ward-Prowse (both of whom have played there for us before), Schneiderlin and Cork who could all play there - that's double the amount necessary, which is similar to an argument of your own.
