Not manor houses. Clue: the cause of many of these was thought to originate in China.

Commons land ? Though the only connection to China I can think of is the loss of rural population as a result of the plague.

I think I'll give you this one, Cologne, since it's been running for a while. The answer is deserted villages. Many of them were abandoned in the 14th century as a result of the Black Death, though some had earlier ceased to be occupied simply because the surrounding land was not good enough to enable people to feed themselves.

Thanks Theo, putting the 700 years together with the Chinese origins got me to thinking it must be something to do with the black death - though I was confused by it having arrived in Dorset - though of course South West England was far more sparsely populated. Also many had been abandoned because the so called 'Medieval warm period`had come to a dramatic end by the end of the 13th Century and the first two decades of the 14th Century were a period of rapid cooling, non existing summers, and consequent failed harvests. After that one a quickie.

Which football stadium is closest to the river Mersey ?

The Springs frog, which lives in outback South Australia, by necessity hibernates during the summer dry - which has been known to last for 10 years. Although it does wake up if the rains come sooner...
