never got a look in. I started going to watch City in the last days of David Pleat. Why I went again is anyone's guess but I did. What seeing Leicester being absolute garbage did for me was made me appreciate the Little and O'Neill years. A thought which strikes me is how some of the players which hardly made the pitch would've been our star players at any other times. So, on a sunny day when we should all be outside, but what we are really doing is scanning the web for City news, here's a chance to wander down memory lane for your favourite players who never really got a look in. I'll start with... Arnar Gunnlaugsson. I remember O'Neill saying that if you should be ahead in a game but you are just struggling to get a goal then you should put a different kind of striker on. Unfortunately for Arnar...he was that different kind of striker. With his bald head there were similarities with former cult hero, Kevin Russell. I sat (stood in front of my seat) in the Kop at this time and I remember some people tried to resurrect the 'Rooster' call. However Arnar deserved his own chant, and he got one, Arnie, Arnie, Arnie! He made himself popular by coming on for the last 20 minutes and almost always scoring a goal. He was not an out and out striker but probably more like Paul Gallagher. He liked to pick the ball up deep and run at goal. He had excellent control and trickery and a fair bit of pace. I'm not going to bore myself or anyone else by checking the stats but it did not seem he was at the club for long. He got frustrated by his lack of starts and moved on all too soon to first team football. I can't remember where unfortunately. Anyone else care to share a chunk of nostalgia on yet another slow City news day?
This season Matty Fryatt, Martyn Waghorn, Bruno Berner all fans favourites and didnt really play. I always like Trevor Benjamin. Yeah he was crap but he always gave 100% and did score some important goals when we got promoted
Levi Porter, a Dyer-esque winger who had incredible pace Josh Low, a winger that actually stayed out on the wing, was never drawn in.
Jimmy Melrose - What a player Gordon Flippen Milne played him as a super sub then unbelievably swapped him for Coventry's Tommy I'm a bag of **** English
Peter Welsh - back in the 1970's. Could play in defence or midfield and had a very good shot. Perenial substitute or reserve but always looked to do something with the ball. Eventually went into local football, I think.
Ian Wilson Only went down when he was shot a for you youngsters very simular and just as important to the team as Neil lennon
Ian Wilson me and my mates bought his dad a drink just before he scored an own goal in the FA Cup Semi final against Spurs in 1872 or something like that
Anyone remember Malcolm Manley ? A Booby Moore style centre back who in 7 years with the club made 120 appearance. Thought he should have been a regular
Steve Yates - related to David Nish. Midfielder who could never keep a regular place in the first team under Jimmy Bloomfield despite having a useful left foot.
Remember Malcom Manley. Utility player who was in and out of the side. Then there was Alan Woollett who played in defence. Both were in the 12 for the '69 cup final. Woollett had one really good season in the 1970's but was otherwise a perenial reserve.
Maybe this is different because it was through injury but I always wanted to see more of Darren Eadie. I wonder if Martin Waghorn will be in this catagory at some point?
At the moment Waghorn definitely jumps out as the obvious answer. Also agree with Eadie, one of my favourite players but every time I asked why he wasn't playing it would be 'he's injured'. Funnily enough when we got relegated and at times in League 1 I was always wanting Hayles to come on for Howard lol. And Nicky Adams - everytime he came off the bench he seemed to create the winning goal. Surprised he's not a regular in a League 1 side at least. Thinking about it, Gradel. Nuff said.
Tommy Wright was a fan favourite aswell because he was a local lad and he scored that goal against forest. He never got a real chance.
