After the departure of Darren Bent In January, Sunderland will look to Jermain Defoe for goals next season. The North East club have experienced an awful second half to the season since Bent left, leaving Steve Bruce looking for a goal scoring replacement.

“Darren Bent did fantastically well here and scored a lot of goals. We have to go and find a replacement for him. We have to go and get a proven striker,” said Steve Bruce.

Defoe has been far from prolific for Tottenham this season after contributing a measly 4 goals in the league. Defoe is believed to be the target for the Black Cats despite the England international’s poor season. After struggling with injury problems for the first half of the season, the striker just hasn’t been able to establish himself in the set up signalling the time for him to move on.

Questions have been raised over the quality of the player and his ability to really make an impact at the highest level. Spurs have been competing with huge expectations since being involved in the Champions League this year and it seems as though the striker just does not possess the quality to cope with it.

He is a proven goal scorer in the Premier League however, and would be a great acquisition for Sunderland. Challenging for a top half place in the Prem and the hope of a Europa League spot at best is the type of standard that the player is much more accustomed to and suits in terms of quality. Like Darren Bent, he brings little to the build-up play and is largely just there to put the ball in the back of the net. This is not enough for a team hoping to regain fourth spot but is perfect for a club like Sunderland.

This lack of adaptability is exactly why a big club has never signed the England man and is the reason why he will be moving away from White Hart Lane this summer.

QUESTION, Who have we got that can play to defoes strengths,,,,,,,,,,,nobody.

Defoe is class imo, but it's unlikely he'll come here. I'd take
Crouch like, i think he and Gyan could strike up a very good partnership

Defoe was good, but 4 goals in a season, tell us something is not right

I'd rather have Shane Long, similar type of player but younger and cheaper and is both available and coming off the back of a great season

I've always rated him, I'd love him here, reminds me a lot of Owen when he was good

Think we have to be realistic in considering our signings. In a perfect world id have Crouch and Defoe and Negredo and Welbeck and Hulk etc etc etc. However in reality for a club like ours we arnt going to be able to attract quality upon quality when it comes to our forwards, singings like Defoe and Crouch are a possibility however only one is a reality as top players wont sign with the possibility of benchwarming unless at a top top club. I'd personally like Defoe or Crouch as i think both would work well with Gyan and then maybe two others from the kindov level of Bothroyd, Long, Danny Graham as cover for our main strikeforce.

I've said previously on another thread that Defoe will not be moving to the SoL and I stand by that belief. Despite what the media are saying, Harry really rates Defoe, so I doubt very much that he will be selling him.

Defoe is quality. He has had injuries this season but he is a quality player. I also think he is a dirty player who leaves his boot in when he should not. If it were not for him, Gordon would not have had all those problems with the broken and re-broken arm. I`d still have him but I think he would get a nosebleed if he had to come this far north.

We might get a season or 2 out of Defoe or Crouch but their best days are behind them.

I detest dealing with Spurs becuae they are unreasonable when it comes to agreeing fees.

Also the wages that these 2 players would request would be a king's ransom.

    Not for me

I think Gyan and Defoe would be a superb partnership but to be honest I can't see Defoe coming to Sunderland.

I can't see who were going to get at the moment, we need someone of quality but there are just not many of those sorts of players out there at the moment.

Without Henderson, which may or may not happen, cant see who would provide him with the ammunition, agree Sess is a class act, but what if he gets injured, back to a season `oh` so long ago, a month actually. and forever since my supporting started. Got the negative vibes.
