This is a Di Canio problem for me, nothing more.
The guy likes to air his dirty laundry in public, there's no denying that and I think this type of thing could end up a regular occurrence throughout Di Canio's managerial career. He has proven in his short time as manager in England that he has extreme man-management skills. He can't publicly humiliate a player and still expect loyalty, he may be manager and he may be the boss but he's also going to rub some people up the wrong way who won't stand for his outbursts. For example, would you think he'd dare say anything on the training pitch to Roy Keane, or to Vinnie Jones? Would he ****, he'd get his head caved in and that's the reason he's going to rub people up the wrong way, he plays a big shot dictator with all the passion and excitement but in every walk of human life, the hard model approach to management (the iron fist) will be met with hostility by some, in any industry.
Bardsley has done wrong, he's evidently a pathetic little idiot but he's acted after being bullied publicly by Di Canio. He'll have been made to feel that unwelcome at Sunderland that he no longer has any loyalty, other than the fact he's got to turn up to stupid events or matches because he's paid to essentially jump through hoops until he finds a new club. Bardsley isn't the only one either, others have left and others will leave, Cattermole looks like he might be on borrowed time for example.
I'm all for a manager with the passion and enthusiasm of Di Canio but you won't get anywhere with his man-management style in a hurry. Players won't respond like they used to, they have too many rights now, I know it and you all know it so whenever Di Canio tries a little fine like he did at Swindon on a player, he'll be met with hostility; at Swindon the players of that calibre will have idolised him and hung on to his every word, but at this level, none of them will give a **** who he is, he was a good player but let's face it Roy Keane was a good player and where did he get?
Di Canio isn't suited for this league in my opinion, I think he'd be better suited at a club in China where they'll really afford him the discipline he craves, these BPL kids just don't care. I would love to be proven wrong, because I love the bloke and what he brings to the neutral, and I love that passion he brings to every single decision or kick of a ball, I really think his ideal of having finely tuned athletes, well regimented would make the game so much more competitive, but I can't see it working on this generation of footballers.
