That's quick Nick, it's not taken you long to turn against him!! Actually I have not seen the game today but it seems we were up against it for large parts of the game but for JW to squander the chance of a point 2 minutes from time is very disappointing. It's not as if he has never missed a penalty before is it? The frustration has started early!
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss I watched your game today, got to admit, it was pretty shocking. Mind you, we were not a great deal better, a home side with 40% possession does not bode well
Thai Canary What Planet are you on! I agree we were up against it but today most teams would have conceded at least 3 or 4 against Liverpool today! Huth should haev scored, Walters had a good effort on target, Ryan had one cleared off the line by Lucas. Yes Walters missed a penalty. He should not take anymore. he misses too many. In possession they looked more at home and in control. I think that was a positive start against a good team.
You are right, Liverpool should have battered the living daylights out of you. How they didn't, I am not sure and they should have been out of sight before half time, long before Stoke looked like scoring, or even posing any kind of threat. I can see why you will take some comfort from the last 10 minutes or so, or not conceding a sack full of goals, but the reality is that Stoke could and perhaps should have been out of contention by that stage. Some credit must go to your team for staying in the game I guess but throughout the game I was thinking, meet the new Stoke, same as the old Stoke, and I am sure you know that is not a compliment as away days are very negative and defensive. Sorry but it was not good, or at least not from a neutrals perspective.
Out of sight before half time? Huth should have scored after 8 minutes 20 seconds. He hit the bar or did you miss that ? Also Shawcross had a shot saved on the line by Lucas. Did you miss that? Also Walters produced a good save out of Mignolet before half time. I rest my case. True Liverpool deserved the win with the amount of chances they created but it was good to see our team also creating chances. I am not going to justify the way Stoke play as the last 2 seasons Norwich have been at Stoke they have been quite dreadful. Probabably the worst team in the Preniership to visit us. Again in both of those games we should have scored more and won more convincinly. BUt the game is all about taking your chances! If you come back please look at MOTD first.
I only got to see the first half and was slightly disappointed with the exclusion of Pennant we needed his pace as an outlet for the defence. but for an away game I think we passed it about and created some chances. Liverpool were really up for it and could have been further ahead than the one goal.
PP - I was probably and still am the most anti Hughes poster on here. I understand why Coates employed him, but he will never be the nicest flower in my little garden
I have no axe to grind with SCFC or its fans, but **** me you lot are in for a rough ride this year. Hughes will make decisions that will leave you in s state of shock. I cannot remember him making a substitution for us until the 70th minute and it would be the wrong one! The man is a twat! Good luck! You're gonna need it.
We've just had 6 years of that so it wouldn't be anything new but I think we played some footie with the ball on the ground today and that has been unheard of for an away game.
Nicky, We must get behind the team and the new gaffer. Jowler, I was pleased that Pennant featured and he gave Enrique something to think about. Next week the season starts for us. What annoys me is that for the past three seasons first game has been away, Norwich, reading and now Liverpool. Also the last game away at Southampton and this year at West Brom
That's odd, we were away at Wigan for the first game the season we played you in our first season back
Still think we need a striker on the pitch that is going to win more balls than Crouch does, I only saw the first half so missed Pennants contribution but we need to push teams back up the pitch so we can play it out from defence.
I think as things go our 1st away game was more positive than most (if not all of TP's) put together. We were more positive than the dross served up in the past and created a few chances which is a pleasing improvement. Is it what we want - probably no - but until we restructure our front line goals will not come easily! I was disappointed to see Walters start and play 90 mins, and combined with Crouch (who needs to find some form) it's not the most potent strike force by any stretch of the imagination. The penalty just rubbed salt into an aged old wound for me! So in summary I felt it wasn't bad for a New manager, away at Liverpool in our 1st game of the season.
oh dear, is this really the way to support our new manager?, you know the one we have all been crying out for?, pathetic, I dont care who takes offense to this but that liverpool side will finish in the top 6 ATLEAST. Atleast we tried to attack and play football what the hell do some people want?, we had a few chances but they had more thats football doesnt mean that the manager has to go for crying out loud. I thought that there were many positvies to take from the game along with many good players to come in. If we are going to have a go at Hughes for that then god ****ing help us!!. Up the potters and lets drive on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what you doing on our board then?, perhaps you need to sort your own team out instead of worrying about ours
A few quotes off the BBC site for ThaiCanary: What an opener for the Premier League! Great game with everything we want to see this season! I'm not one for hyperbole, but as first games of the Premier League season go, that was pretty darn good. "That was quite a 90 minutes, wasn't it?" "Plenty of positives for Mark Hughes and Stoke, who will feel they should have claimed a point." As far as the Premier League 2013-14 season goes, that is one game down - 379 to go. I hope they are all as good as that one was. Doesn't sound like we were as awfull as you make out. Yes, Liverpool could have won by more, but I'm quite happy with that start to the season. It promises much more than last year and if we can add a bit of pace to our forward line, I think we'll do ok.
Thought you guys were unlucky today. Think we deserved the win based on number og chances created and overall performance, although ironically you probably had the 2 best chances of the game, the penalty and Huth hitting the bar after Mig had come flapping out! You were still a threat from set pieces (although that is our main weakness at the moment) but also tried to get the ball down and pass it around in midfield. Think you probably need a top class striker, Jones, Jerome & Crouch are all very similar type strikers and none are prolific enough at this level really. Probably someone that is quick and has the ability to stretch teams in behind as we were comfortable playing a high line knowing Crouch won't run in behind. Good luck for the season, don't think you have to worry about relegation and this year will be about Hughes trying to change your style in a similar way Rodgers did with us last year.
Biscan, I went to the game today. Thanks for telling it how it was. All the best. As for Thai the budgie fan. Why don't you just engage your brain, and stop talking through your arsenhole.
