I thought it was a pretty soft penalty. Mulumbu kind of lunged like an idiot, but he really didn't make much contact. Shaw wasn't really going anywhere.

Not the worst pen ever given, but I can see why WBA fans are going to be mad.

He got enough of him that Shaw ended up on the deck, and without any exaggeration from what I could see.

Shaw is so agile in there...last year we started to see those surging little dances through the box, always looking like they'd draw a mistimed challenge. Don't think that it'll be the last penalty he wins in a Saints shirt.

Still bet we're confined to the same old well-worn slot on MOTD, though! Perhaps Lambert scoring in Lambert Week might just about save us from that, though.

Maybe. Although Motson was at our game I think. Doesn't that mean we're likely to be one of the bigger games?

Definitely need a striker, whether they make an impact off the bench or push a current starter to the bench who can then make an impact. Defence sounded good but we need to take more of our chances and practise learning the offside rule!

This result shows huge progression over pre season for us; WBA's style of play was devastating against that and managed 5 goals against us last season without reply, but we've clearly worked on our game which makes the clean sheet all the more satisfying. Shaw my MOTM, great in both directions and made the penetrating run to win the penalty. Lovren looks a step up from what we had last season in the centre of defence. Wanyama worries me slightly, he seems great at winning the ball - possibly one of the best in the league - but he gave away a lot of needless fouls and his passing was a little inconsistent, but there seems plenty of room for development.

I went for a win...I don't know why some people thought we weren't in with a chance. WBA are not a better side than us...we won't beat everyone, but we are capable of beating most on our day. Was scared as time went by though...opposition only need one decent chance or one of our players slip. Good start to season.

Why the negative end to the sentance?! He was sumblime, possibly my MoM with JWP.

Because last season he was really poor for Lyon. Can't just ignore that. So yeah, very much hoping he keeps it up.

Since last season, games are done on excitement. And with some shock results, and many games with more goals and I'd imagine a lot more shots, we will be near the end. Untill the 60th minute there were about 2 shots on target! The whole game was played in midfield (And we beat WEST BROM! the team who smashed us over both legs last season!)

Same here. Last season's WBA, minus Lukaku and Odemwingie, and plus an aged Anelka. Nothing special at all.

Fonte was a bit suspect at times but everyone else was solid. Shaw was brilliant, best signing of the summer but only just, as Lovren and Wanyama were excellent. Lambert was quiet, but did the business with the pen. Why I ever doubt him is beyond me! To think we had 3 18 year old academy players, plus Lallana, playing, and they all looked as though they've been playing in the Prem for years.

So are we top of the league then?

The pen by Rickie was awesome. Pace and in off the post. The keeper went the right way and still could not stop it. Just brilliant!!!

Bloody Arsenal ****ting up my accumulator, (I forgive Saints).
