Was in the states when WC 94 was on so normal times for me.

I remember watching Italy vs Republic of Ireland at my uncles house with his mates when Ray Houghton scored that cracker.

When the goal went in they all went nuts, then asked why the Pendes family weren't celebrating. :)

See, I thought 90 and 94 were the two disappointing world cups for me - they were flanked by Mexico 86 (I was in Primary 5) and France 98 (I was 20 and living the life of Reilly, Scotland were in it)

This deserves a GC thread to itself.

Sadly, unlike Medro, I've never been in a country when a world cup is on there to get the buzz of it. Maybe the US, being a massive country and not really being a football country (traditionally) meant that it wasn't as hyper as other countries might be but it would be cool, even if you're not going to any games, just to be there or thereabouts when the tournament's on.

One thing's for sure, every four years I come down with a heavy, heavy case of World Cup fever - tournament wallcharts up in the office, world cup parties, the lot.

94 and 02 were the ****est world cups imo. 2006 wasn't great either tbf, but 2002 was the worst. Only one decent side (Brazil), a ****e Germany got to the final and Turkey and South Korea were semi-finalists. <doh>

You guys are reminding me what a **** memory I've got <laugh>

I canny remember much of any of them.

I do have a memory of Gordon McQueen in an interview with an old man mask on saying the sun was playing havoc with his complexion. Might of been Mexico or Argentina. Anyway he didny kick a single baw in the tourney.

We went to a street parade before the Brazil - Holland quarter final (I think) with all their fans and as an 11 year old kid I was blown away.

Brazilian women in carnivale gear and all the Dutch fans going as mad as ever.

The first WC I can remember was '86 and even then, my recollection isn't that great.

I loved the build-up to Italia 90, being at primary school, I had the 2 Scotland shell-suits, we all had mini Coca-Cola balls and yo-yo's??

I remember the first game like yesterday, Argentina getting beaten off The Cameroon as they were called then, the Camerooners booting **** out of Cannigia.

Scotland's first game vs Costa Rica, pumped, then we beat Sweden, then glorious failure vs Brazil, Muller scoring the winner <wah> I was greetin' when we got put out, my dad asked me why and I informed him that we would never get through a 1st round WC group ever as that was our best chance (3 out of went through in 6 of the 8 groups).... how true....

Then Platt's goal vs Belgium, Gazza being immense, Toto Schilacci, Baggio, Maradonna, Matheus, Klinsman, Brehme, Litbarski... memories!!

But you and I are both in our late 20's? Surely you remember more than that?

86 is the first I remember too. Most of the games were on "past my bedtime" though <wah>. I definitely missed scotland's first game. Edit: Just checked - wasn't 'most' of the games that kicked off late, just some of the group games.

I remember being in France on holiday for the semis of '90 and watching England-Germany in a campsite surrounded by weeping (Gazzaesque) englishers. I was childishly (and silently) pleased.

98 for me was when I finally realised I was investing too much emotion in supporting scotland. The expectation and hope of finally qualifying for the KO phases after the first two games followed by the Morocco pumpfest was one almighty let-down too far <laugh><wah>
