I'm not too sure that his IRA sympathies and refusal to wear a poppy would go down too well amongst the Wigan fans. Not too far from Warrington where feelings still run high about the bombings in the 90s.

Lets not do politics. Two sides to every story and the lad grew up in and amongst **** no child should grow up in. Is his view on politics strange? Yes. Is he probably emotionally damaged as a result of growing up in such an area? Probably yes. Is it his right to take any political stance he wants? Defo yes. The fact he's a limited footballer is enough for me and we should focus on that, his ability, or lack of imo.

He brought his politics into sport when he refused to wear a shirt with a poppy, which is a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in WW1 and since, defending the freedom of Great Britain. He is happy to take the money associated with playing for a team in the English Premier League.

Yes he is a **** footballer, but even if he was a world beater I would not want him playing for my team again after disrespecting our fallen.

No the sport brought politics into football when they started putting poppies on shirts. It's his right to support or not support whatever he wants whether we agree or not. It's called democracy. It's our liberty and freedom, it's what what our men fought and died for. The right to choose. By wanting to take away McClean's right to choose, it's you who are trodding on the memories of our fallen heros.

And for the record I don't agree with McClean's view on politics but I'll stand up for his right to have these views.

No, I don't want to take away his right to choose, but given his choice, if I have a choice I don't want to see him playing for my team. With freedom to choose comes the consequences of those choices. If we had a chance of signing Messi, but because of the Falklands he wouldn't wear a shirt with a poppy once a year, then I wouldn't want him playing for my team either.

And that's fair do mate. I think it's a bit narrow minded but fair do. <ok>

Don't want to derail this but McClean does not have a democratic right to IRA sympathies as the IRA are a banned, non democratic terrorist group. It's like having Al-Qaeda sympathies.

Strange too because the old Irish Parliamentary Party which fought for home rule supported GB in the war, and many nationalists died fighting with their northern, unionist counterparts. So really he disrespects both sides.

He's also ****e at football.

That is such a flippant comment which takes no detail into the world that lad lived in into any account Whatsoever. I'm not saying the lads views are right but I think some Empathy is required as to why the lad is so messed up and damaged as a result of childhood traumas. Unfortunately life is not as black and white as you've just made out

Dont forget lads you are talking about a young dumb rich person who plays sport for a living. When will his political views be taken seriously!!!!!! Football is a game which entertains the masses there is far too many things associated with it now. At McCleans age and schooling are we saying he should have political like skills, jesus at his age getting drunk and chasing totty was all I was bothered about, cut the kid some slack.

bit surprised to be honest. Him as a person is a horrible git but him as a player I'm normally impressed by. I know he didn't have a great last season but, surely would have still been decent in a back-up capacity?

And the bold bit is the ONLY thing that matters in this whole debate about him playing for us. If he doesn't wear a poppy and plays like Cristiano Ronaldo every week then I reckon a lot of people on here wouldn't give a damn about his views - but he doesn't so his views come into question - Football is the only thing that matters to me - in the same way with Di Canio as manager - his politics are no issue to me - His football is all that matters

He was diabolical last season and at times looked Sunday league standard. Hes out of his depth in the Prem, he wont be missed by me!
If he keeps working on his right foot he might one day become a decent player!

great example of a player starting to believe in his own press. Had a few good games at the start then started to think he was a world beater. Unfortunately the lad is so limited, the premier league is beyond him

Hes just like Liam Lawrence. He had a good first season too then it went to his head.

Football is all that matters. Somebody else's opinions are their own whether I agree with them or not.

I would be more concerned by the fact that I think his lack of intelligence and professionalism off the pitch (his political views just being symptomatic) hindered his form and development on the pitch. With the right attitude he could turn into a strong premier league player in time, but his character probably deems that he will never reach that potential.

Having said all this, I think we should be recouping at least £2.5m for a player of his age, ability, and contract length. The fact that we are selling to Wigan probably means it is less than this figure, but I would like to see decent performance related bonuses in there etc.

Probably time he, and we, moved on.
