Liverpool FC are prepared to off-load Stewart Downing at a massive loss with Newcastle United having been told they can sign him for a cut-price £5million.

The winger's representatives have been contacted by the North East outfit to confirm their interest and find out whether he would be keen on a move to St James' Park.

Downing, who cost the Reds £20million from Aston Villa two years, has asked for some time to consider his options.

The 29-year-old had no intention of leaving Anfield after being reassured by Brendan Rodgers earlier in pre-season that he remained part of his plans.

However, he now intends to hold talks over his future after learning of Liverpool's willingness to sell him on.

Downing played in Liverpool's opening three friendlies against Preston, Indonesia and Melbourne Victory but has been an unused substitute in the past two games against Thailand and Olympiacos.

Philippe Coutinho, Iago Aspas, Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe have all been selected ahead of him in the wide attacking roles.

Downing, who was the subject of interest from West Ham last month, wants to stay put and fight for his place. However, if he's informed he's not going to feature then he will reluctantly agree to a transfer.

Having battled so hard to establish himself as a first-team regular in the second half of last season, the England international doesn't want to go back to life warming the bench.

Downing, who has two years left on his contract, was told by Rodgers last November he could leave in the January transfer window but responded by kick-starting his Anfield career and played a key role in Liverpool's revival.

“I feel settled now,” he said recently. “The first year at Liverpool was difficult but once I established myself in the team last season I really enjoyed it.

“That's why I don't want to leave. If you are playing with good players in a good team then you don't want to lose that.”

Newcastle are signing Loic Remy on a season-long loan from QPR and hope to further boost their strikeforce with a deal for Aston Villa's Darren Bent. Toon boss Alan Pardew wants Downing to provide the service for them.

Downing, who grew up in the North East and started his career at Middlesbrough, will be part of the Liverpool squad who fly to Norway today. Rodgers' side face Valerenga in Oslo tomorrow night.

Imagine Newcastle next season. After loosing Cabaye and Ba they sign Bent and Downing.

Sterling and Ibe might have been ahead of him in the last 2 games, but like with Sterling last season they probably won't last the whole season.

£5mil seems quite low to be honest. I know he's not been great but he did improve last season and contribute - when we had no other options due to Sterling needing a rest. I think knowing he isn't certain of a start has made him puck his ideas up, especially knowing that a 17 and 18 year old are pushing ahead of him.

He does offer good defensive cover with Johnson, something Sterling/Ibe/Aspas probably won't be able to do.

I'd probably take close to £10mil - lets push the price up if it's Newcastle as payback for Carroll!

And why would good players want to play with you, Stewie? You're not up to scratch; time to go.

Mweh; Unless they match his current wages he'll continue to fight for his place here and I don't blame him.

We complain about loyalty with Suarez etc then lambast Downing for staying.

Hopefully someone comes in for him though I'd honestly all jokes & last years rants are past I'd like to see him do well somewhere else as long as we improve with his replacement on the field.

He'll suit a Newcastle type team.

Downing isn't here out of loyalty...he's getting 70k a week to put in mediocre performances whilst being carried by much better players. He was useful last season but we can do without now; it's just a shame he's comfortable and doesn't need to go.

He could leave on a free for me. The most negative attacker I have ever seen. Sterling and ibe just show how poor he is.

That may well be true but he didn't put a gun to our heads and force us to throw 70K a week at him after one good season for Villa. He also hasn't ran to sign a new deal he has no intention of honoring (thank god he probably would honour it)

He hasn't embarrassed us publicly over and over again (well maybe technically on the pitch)

He's just been a bit ****. And yet he gets abused and told to **** off as if he somehow conned us and the guy that has shamed us and is trying to conn us gets a collective crowd blowjob for doing us the favour of turning up.

Go figure.

Good to get another one of those horror transfers our the way. God we wasted so much money. Criminal really.

While what you say is true I just think a lot on here see him as the type of player who will not help us progress.
He hasn't embarrassed with his antics, very true but he has been embarrassing at times with his performances and lack of spine. If he had been more attack minded I think most people would forgive him but his reluctance to take on a full back is criminal esp when he is earring if money.
I don't wish him anything but good luck just want tobe somewhere else though.

I do agree that I don't want him playing for us mate. I'm just not blaming him on the daft contract anyone would have bitten our arm off for.

Particularly if you were a bit **** who'd had his purple season and met up with clearly crazy people who mistook you for Messi :D

Yeah, I agree with most. I really like the guy's attitude about himself - about training and attacking not so much. He's not reacted negatively to the bad rep he has with the fans and that's a nice thing to see. I'm sure he's a decent enough bloke, and I thank him for trying his best here. He did help out sometimes. But that best of his isn't near what we need and we have more offensive options now - I'd love to help him get on with his career somewhere else. He could excel in a different team, one in which he is the star. So thanks Stewie, please help us out one last time and take this offer.

He turned down an £8m move to West Ham because he didn't want to move to London.

I can see him excelling at a smaller club but the pressure of playing for LFC got too much for him - it's a shame because if I remember correctly, his first few performance for LFC were pretty good - he attacked well and showed no fear. But then it went down hill. .

£5m and £70k saved in wages <ok>

I agree with you all.

i was done with downing on fa cup final day... he was so negative.. he's a back passer, safety minded never tries stuff.

Cabaye isn't going anywhere, and we've still got plenty of talent in the side <ok>

No Bent. Remy and Gomis actually.

Given your 'Director of Football' will probably call him Joanne Byebye at some point this week, I expect Yohan will be looking for the exit, and given Fat Mike's propensity for taking a profit, he'll probably go for a good price...
