Afternoon all, Had a bit of a flashback today of halftime at the Dell, does anyone remember "My Ding-a-Ling" by Chuck Berry (?) being played quite regularly? Are there any other tunes that us old goats can recall? And when did the team wave before the match end and why? This is my first thread so be gentle!
The first game I went to at the Dell they kept playing Ride a White Swan by T Rex. If I ever hear that song I am back on the terraces at the Dell watching Saints V Arsenal.
Few JCL's here. The first one I remember is Paperback Writer which was still in the charts [I think] when I first heard it at The Dell. The songs that always seemed to be played pre-match, ie the ones that stick in my mind are Tears of a Clown, Love Grows [Where My Rosemary Goes] and Na Na Na Na [Kiss 'em goodbye]. I can almost feel the cold, hard concrete under my feet when I hear them.
Anything playing over the PA system is wasted for those I the Kingsland/Northam corner as we can't hear a damn thing!
Mostly at half time wasn't it the Albion band that played........Didn't we have to throw coins at them.........(Ok I know the coins were for charity but in the beginning I thought you had to throw the coins at them) Well I was only 5........
Talking of old Saints related songs. I am reliably informed that this used to accompany matchdays on Solent...
The Albion band surely played before the teams came out as well, usually for 10 or 15 minutes as I recall, with a selection of (usually) the same tunes, including the Match of the Day theme (the old one) and finishing with Oh When the Saints as the teams came out of the corner past them.
I used to get to the ground way before the band came out to play, and can still remember being disgruntled when the Tannoy used to fade out, usually when it was playing one of my favourite tunes, to allow the band to play. At least the emergence of the marching band meant that the match was soon to start.
"One Vision" by Queen always makes me think of the dell. Team used to come out to that song a lot in the 90s
The Albion Band - I've been trying to forget that lot for years. One of my earliest memories at the old Dell was someone throwing a bog roll that dropped straight into one of the band members Tuba, the guy promptly stopped playing, stopped marching and shook his fist at the crowd, with all those behind bumping into him causing absolute chaos. What a rabble?
Can't hear Stay Close to Me by Take That without remembering the first game after ML's take over. They used it for the video of the event on Player as well. It made me feel nice and safe with our Big Bear at the helm.
