We HAVE to get a couple of big names this summer.

We have to send a signal that we are serious, not only for a top 4 spot but for challenging for the title (who would say that with a couple of good strikers and a seriously good CB we can't challenge next year).

We have to send a signal to our star players that we mean business and (if we can persuade them all to stay) they will not be wasting next year in a scrap for forth which if we don't get would mean disaster.

We have to spend big and wise because this is a unique oportunity for our club, there is so much in place already, we need to complete the picture now, because next year I'm sure it will be too late.

Levy has been very vocal over the last few months, so it will be a true definition of his intentions what happens this summer.

If any of our big players go then as far as I'm concerned ENIC can **** off and we'll have someone on board who doesn't mind taking a big gamble.

TBH I'm sick of this "we're a brilliantly run financial club" - you telling me that Bill Nich would rather be a few quid in the black or properly competing for every trophy?!

I'm not saying go kamikazee like Leeds but that CL money has NOT been reinvested in the squad, and we have solid, decent offers on the table for some of our deadwood!

Come on Levy pull your finger out!

Yes absolutely. And the reason it's a unique opportunity is that we don't need to go kamikazee on the spending. We have a fantastic base and all we need are 2 or 3 world class players that would give us that edge and propell us into the elite.

I wonder what effect the New Stadium situation has in Levi's thinking and how it would affect his willingness to go for it this summer.

Would you like to enlighten us on your findings of our half-year financial figures?
 
In all honesty I think the new stadium should be put on hold for this year. I know we need to get a bigger ground to get more revenue to build a bigger fan base.
But as has already been pointed out many times, if it was not for those stupid slip ups against "lesser teams" we would quite easily be sitting in 3rd. ( I know hindsight is 20-20). Last years transfer window and the one in Jan were very disappointing (apart from VDV, absolute quality). We had the Champions League to offer the bigger names, we were sniffing around players like Luis Fabiano and Suarez and nothing came of it. Now that we're not in the CL we're going to have to offer these big names something different. A higher wage, a bigger sign on fee with the emphasis that we're going to push for that CL spot and possibly the title.
This transfer window has to be so different, we need these marque signings in early. A) to show our better players we're serious about pushing for the league and better things and B) so they can get settled and get the new season off to a bang.
 
We just need one top quality striker and a decent keeper. The squad is excellent. Harry just needs to sort his strategy and tactics out and play players in their best positions. Seriously..how many teams have the quality of depth that we have? I dont think that we need to spend big.
 
I disagree, too.
We need to buy intelligently.

The squad needs some serious trimming and we need to bring in more top quality yet unlikely players, if you know what I mean.
We can't go out and compete with those around us on a financial level, so we need to do what we've already been doing and go for the Modric and Berbatovs of this world, while bringing in good youngsters.

I disagree with you, at this time we need to bring in that key player to show our players like Modders, VDV, Bale that we are really pushing to compete for the title and to get into the top four. I think it is crucial this transfer market to do that to hold on to them.
 
Yes Snowy, but I feel that we can do that without breaking the bank and without trying to compete with the clubs around us for transfers.
None of the three players that you mentioned were massive transfers, though Modric was a record admittedly, but they're the kind of players that will push us on.
 
Some players, like Bentley should have been shipped out long ago. I worked as a trader. if you made a mistake, we had a saying that "the first cut is the easiest to take" meaning, that sod's law dictates that when you have made a mistake, and are in a mess, things will only get worse the longer you prevaricate. The other problem, being very similar to what is happening at Spurs is; all the time you have capital tied up in something that's not performing, or even losing you money; then that capital can't be employed more profitably elsewhere.
We should make a quick and final decision as to what is dead wood, sell for the first sensible offer, and move on. Let's face it, these players contracts are getting shorter every month, so their value is hardly going to suddenly increase, is it?
 
I think Spurs like a few other clubs have gone out and spent loads of money on players end up being duds. The racist Rebrov springs to mind. So just splashing the cash doesn't work. But we do need to get in the players we need quickly so we can fit them into the squad
 
I'm a touch confused as to what is levy's main consideration. Will he buy because we need or will he buy because he considers keeping Modric after his threat as more important then because we need? He's being held to ransom a bit by Modric.
 
We need to become an attractive team to come to/remain at. This means good wages, CL football and a good chance of getting a trophy.
I think our better players will wait it out with us for one more year as they can see we are improving, if we don't deliver the above by then, we will be in trouble.
And I just can't face watching players like Stalteri, Mido or Tainio again.
 
You can just forget all the big names being banded about, it won't happen, we will not be lashing out 30m fees and paying 100k+ wages to one man. If you think that, youre mad. For a start, all the younger names will not settle for anything less than CL football next season. A big name with a few yrs left maybe, or lesser known players from abroad, and a bargain on the last day...usual stuff!
 
Luke. You seem to be forgetting one thing in your theory. Not all players have, for instance, Michael Owen's attitude of "I just want to be at a top club even if I only start a few games every year". Some players are more ambitious than that. They want to play, and would rather be at a good club where they don't spend most of their time warming the bench.
