I'm normally quite up on betting rules, but I've got a question that I don't know the answer to, so hopefully someone will know.

The Hannons today have launched an appeal in regards to Sky Lanterns contraversial defeat in the Falmouth stakes, so I'm just wondering if the appeal is succesful will bookmakers payout?

Shergar - some will as a gesture of good will (PP and the likes). Most will claim after they have weighed in the result is official

Hi Shergar. I'm not that well up on betting rules either but I would go long odds on that there's not a one word answers to your question.

Given that all bookies have probably paid out on the winner I doubt they would be too keen to pay out twice, other than for publicity. Also I suspect not all bookmakers have the same rules and some may say pay on first past the post whilst others will say winner as determined by xxx (where xxx may differ from bookie to bookie).

Not much help I'm afraid but thought I'd say hello.

Cheers guys, it's one of those grey areas that rarely occurs. I did have the bet with PP so if anyone will payout out as a nice gesture then it will be them. I was just wondering if they actually had to pay out.

I know I'm very bias as I backed her, but I was very pissed off that the stewards didnt reverse the placing on the day, Elusive Kate hung from one side of the track to the other, and Buick repeatedly whacked Sky Lantern across the face with his whip. I think the stewards should be sacked if they can't see that Sky Lantern would have won without the interference:biggrin:

Funny how we all interpret races differently especially through our pockets.
I backed Elusive Kate that day and would have been well miffed if she had been thrown out. I thought she won the race fair and square and at no stage did I think Sky Lantern would have got past her. Buick did nothing wrong in my book, although he did receive a 3 day ban, so the stewards obviously thought different!
We will never know IF Sky Lantern would have got past her if Kate had remained straight.

My point being here is.....having watched the race repeatedly I must admit....if I'd have had a bunce on the Lantern that day I would be in exactly the same frame of mind as you KS.....miffed!!!!
Funny how we race read when our money is down!!!

KS....I now hope the result is overturned as I'm sure PP will pay you out....then we have 2 happy bunnies for the price of one!!! Good luck.

I have seen results changed by the same Newmarket stewards for alot less than that, take Jaquelins Quest in the guineas a few years back? There was alot less interference that day.

We will see anyways, Corals have opened a market on it, and Elusive Kate is 1/6 to keep the race, with Sky Lamtern 7/2, so I'm not holding out much hope

By the way chaps, I put a horse up yesterday at Killarney......Alpha and Omega. I would advise you all to have a look at the reply of the race. The beast reared badly as the gates opened and he lost a lot of ground. Any chance he had was obviously gone from that moment on. He made up the lost ground but was never going to get through the wall of horses on them bends and remained last until into the straight. He then made very eye catching ground on the outside of the lot and finished a fast finishing 5th only beaten 7 1/2 lengths at the line. From what I could see he wasn't beaten up to get there either.
Yesterday morning I checked his entries before steaming in, and the only race he was entered in was last nights at Killarney. This morning it appears he has 2 entries at Killarney on Friday, a 17F handicap on the flat, and a 17F handicap hurdle!
This horse remains a maiden under both codes, but has run some decent races in defeat and his turn to get in the winners enclosure will come sooner rather than later me thinks.
I also think it's interesting that his trainer Charles Coakley is based at Killarney.
Probably not a horse to be lumping on ( I have in the past, and will probably do so again!) but I think he needs to be monitored closely, and Friday just might be the day.

KS, there was an amended result at Killarney last night....funny enough, the race I mentioned above. If the same stewards that amended that result had of been in charge of the Falmouth Elusive Kate would have been thrown out, shot and sitting in a tin of Pedigree Chum in Tescos now.....have a look.

Nothing for me today but ‘oooooooh I say’ Telescope is back on Thursday at Leicester (3.10). Sir Michael’s charge was robbed of his chance to win a Derby but I’m still full of hope that he can reach the ‘top table’ by the seasons close.

I might even dig that picture of a telescope back out to wish him luck (although perhaps not as it didn’t do much good a couple of months back!).

Good luck if you do trade.

Good call on Burning thread Joe - I was on waseem Ferrers unfortunately.

As far as I know Shergs the bookies are not obliged in any way whatsoever to pay out on amended results through objections. As Ron states however some will do so and put the losses down to positive Public relations and advertising. They will decide depending on their potential losses.

As someone who had not bet on the race I really feel that the result should be reversed. I feel Sky Lantern's opportunity to race straight was completely taken away by the other horse and that the margin of defeat was not enough to suggest Elusive Kate would definitely have won had Sky Lantern been able to race straight. In fact had Sky Lantern been able to race straight and Elusive Kate still drifted across the track I would say Sky Lantern would definitely have won as EK must have cost herself more with the drift than she won by, by causing the other horse to drift also SL had no alternative but lose the ground.

I can understand the argument for keeping the race but on balance for me the argument for a reversal holds more water and also feels more just.
