Well, I don't know the actual terms of the buyback clause. but the one that is being spread around now is just that Arsenal get first refusal for 25M, and if they turn it down they get half. So United would not have to bid 50M, it would just need Arsenal or Fabregas to say no.

I have to think though that for Arsenal to write that buyback clause in, there must have been a fairly good expectation that Fabregas would seriously consider a return. We knew for years that RVP was thinking of leaving when he didn't sign a contract. Fabregas has never waivered in saying that Arsenal and Barcelona are the only two clubs he would play for. He has even repeated that recently. Then there is the thing about him and his lady buying a house in London.

I hear what you are saying, but I don't think it is unreasonable of me to think that Fabregas might pick Arsenal over United.

I don't think it's unreasonable for Fabs to come back to Arsenal. I guess there a fair few variable to contend with before Fabregas can be considered an actual transfer. The last time we heard from him, he seems happy at Barca. But it would be a great ending should he come back to us.

Is this really the case? Unless i've missed some other super midfielder at Barca, but who else can take over from Xavi after he leaves or needs to be subbed? Personally I would want him back, not based on nostalgia, but that he's a bloody good player.

On a side note, I know we get a signing on fee should Barca sell him, but if we bought him for say £30m, would it get reduced based on our agreed signing on fee? Will we then buy him for around £20m?

Fabregas will never replace Xavi, he is too direct and ambitious in possession to ever fit in with their philosophy. Maybe with the signing of Neymar it shows they are willing to altar their style but the fact they have given Xavi another lengthy contract shows how much faith they have in him to carry on in the middle for another few years at least.

This guys says the opposite and states SSN conducted a special interview with him. Dont know either but just adding it to the discussion.

Honestly, I follow Arsenal news every single day (as I am sure you do with United) and if Fabregas had ever said anything about being prepared to join United, I would have seen it. This guy doesn't actually quote anything, he just says that there is "contradictory information". If there is, it is extremely well hidden.

For me Fabregas can do both. I remember in the early days, he used to play that Xavi role for us. But it was only at the end when Wenger started making Fabs more direct. At the end of the day, this is Man U throwing in a speculative bid. What we do know is that Fabs loves Barca a lot and it would take a pissed off Fabs to want a move, especially to Man U.

I think they have given up on him reverting to a Xavi style player, they have utilised him mostly as an auxilary forward or a false number 9 because they don't trust him in possession from deep positions. When they signed Fabregas, it always seemed like it was going to be for political reasons. There were no real plans for him, just hope that because he is a world class footballer that they could find a role for him in the team but it just hasn't worked out. At the end of the day this is all down to Cesc, does he want to stay, come crawling back to Arsenal, or have a fresh start at United...if his valuation is met I am certain Barca will sell.

Do you think Neymar coming in will make them more likely to sell? Add to that Thiago Silva and Masch going back into midfield and you could say they wont even notice hes gone.

Well what it will do is limit Cesc's playing time, he will probably get the same time on the pitch that David Villa got last season and there is no way he is going to accept that.

Good point. The season before a WC can cause some unlikely transfers and players want as much game time as possible.

Interesting analysis Batmanu. However with Thaigo gone, wouldn't Barca be relying on Fabs more now?

You know, I would ****ing settle for that right now, because if there is a 99% chance of him returning to Arsenal and a 1% chance of him deciding to go to United I would rather not take the risk and let him become a superstar at Barca.

But honestly I don't think Thiago leaving will change anything, he was the long term replacement for Xavi, I suspect Barca will go all out to find a new one now whether it be this Summer or next because they clearly don't fancy Cesc there.

I think they will sell and therefore that is why I am surprised United put up the money. I don't think too many people will see Cesc coming back, as crawling back to Arsenal. He will be well received. If he is rejected by Barcelona and their fans then he is hardly going to want to risk that again with United. He is going to come back to Arsenal where he knows we will give him a hero's welcome, and he can live with his 'wife' and kid.

I don't know how I can convince United fans, or jaded Arsenal fans, but the relationship between Wenger and Fabregas is tight. I would say there is a very small chance of Cesc snubbing Arsenal. If United made the offer really believing that they could get Fabregas then I would be surprised.
