The name that appears to be on everyone's lips is the Udinese forward Vydra but I heard some news today that we are also looking at, the ex Wigan striker Franco Di Santo who is out of contract. Contrary to what has been said recently that we are prepared to wait a few weeks Di Satos arrival is imminent. Personally I rate this guy quite highly. Anyone else agree.
His record is hardly prolific, almost 'Schecteresc'. He is a big lump at 6'3" and Chelsea and Argentina seemed to see something in him ....but he has not delivered enough for me (or for Chelsea, Argentina, Wigan it seems, as they all lost interest). Is he any better than Moore? His record says no, but I shall put my faith in ML and hope he doesnt make another 'Schecteresc' mistake in getting a useless 2nd striker again.
For me, this is one who flatters to deceive. As swim says, he is hardly prolific. Wiki lists him at 6ft 4" but he doesn't play like a target man and, from memory, doesn't frighten or bully anyone in the air like Andy Carroll for instance. I do remember some nice touches (for a big man) and some half tidy goals but nothing like enough of them. Perhaps Laudrup feels he can make better use of him than his other clubs did and teach him a few things. If not, I can't see the point of signing him. We need goal scoring pedigree right now, not unfulfilled potential.
We need a quality second striker as Bony will be away at the African Cup of Nations for a significant period. Di Santo looks more like a third striker which we also need as Moore will be leaving.
Please not Di Santo, a poor striker who struggled to get a poor Wigan side on occassions, (9 goals in 91 is not somone i want here. But Ml said he did want someone different So maybe the difference here would be Bony is a goalscorer Di santo isn't. No thanks he can go elsewhere with a bit of luck.
Don't want anyone from Wigan Gary Hooper has said that he won't be at Celtic next season. He's a lad who knows how to score, and could be the ideal back up striker along with Donnelly, but Celtic would probably hold out for silly money.
Thought QPR were leading contenders for Hooper for only £5m Off the wall shout for a plan B - Peter Crouch. Ok I hear you laugh but he's a great target man and has a good touch for a big lad.
I love reading other clubs using Bony's lack of experience as to why their clubs didnt bid. Dutch player of the year, top scorer in the League, proven International, 9 goals in 14 European games .... what more do they want? The guy is more experienced and has a better record than all the other strikers I have seen touted and signed so far Jealousy eh!!
So by their logic, no club would sign anyone from outside the PL. Mr Mourinho, 'would you like to sign Lionel Messi' No thanks he has no PL experience. ****ing imbeciles all of them.
It appears there seems to be some opposition to the possible signing of Di Santo but I am yet to be convinced that he is not the right type of player for us. After all he has been courted by some of the bigger clubs over recent seasons, he is one of the current Argentina strikers, is now fully fit after injury and importantly won't cost us a penny. I would still like to see him become our second striker.
The guy is a proven non goal scorer in English football. To sign him on your logic that he is free, we may as well as keep Luke Moore who in my Humble view is as good if not better than Di Santo. He has played 122 times in british football scoring 14, over the exact same time period Moore has played 115 games scoring 17. I am sorry he is simply not good enough for where we are now. I dont care whether he is for free or not.
Perhaps its a South American thing. In the Prem they either fail, move on quickly or become mercanaries (or all 3)...yet in La Liga and their home leagues they blossom. Strange innit?
There's about six weeks left in this window,so plenty of time to find the type of player he needs. We could be in for a pleasant surprise.
