Not too many goals are scored from corners anyway, most teams are quite good in all leagues at stopping chances from there, , but I take your point at having someone who can take a decent free kick from a good position outside the penalty area . I can't recall anyone for us over the years who you know is going to trouble the keeper on a regular basis. I think that's a part of the game for us that always gets overlooked.
To some extent I agree with you - but until recently we haven't had players who have been quite good enough ( regularly ) to win sufficient headers in the box - not since the Ashby /Hope era. Nicky Southall ? Whilst I appreciate the argument by GeminiSwiftgfc, and have given you an answer to your question, I would say that we need to have players that can be good enough to win balls delivered from set pieces - over the last few years we have missed out on the potential that such occasions presented because our ability to win headers hasn't been great......... there again looking at teams like Barcelona -they always take short corners or short free kicks ( unless Messi is 20-25 yards out from goal ) - in order to keep possession.
I was thinking more of a player along the lines of Ian Harte ,who forces a keeper to make a save, rather than chipping it into the box where defenders have 70-30% chance of clearing it. I suppose now you've mentioned Trigger,he was one, and Danny Jackman could as well, but I can't remember anyone else, and its such a good weapon to have in your armoury. Look at last season, when Joe Martin or one or two of the others took a free kick and and nearly hit the top of the Rainham End roof, or hit it straight into the wall. They're professional footballers for chrise sake, They practise all week.
This was an issue that bugged me last season too. I remember the Rotherham game at home where Charlie Allen pretty much took every single corner and quite frankly his corners are average at best (another thing that Spiller used to do). I would have Whelpdale take them from one side and I would also have him take free kicks. I think his ability to curl the ball whilst moving is very good so he should be pretty decent from dead ball situations.
Gills PegLeg, I'm shocked that you didn't put Bayo in goal as well! Goalkeeping coaches are quick to say "make yourself big"... with Bayo they won't have to! My lineup: Nelson Fish Barrett Legge Martin Whelpdale Linganzi Gregory Weston McDonald Bayo Although a more attacking variant could see a midfield/attack of: Whelpdale Linganzi Weston Kedwell McDonald Bayo It's mouthwatering stuff, reckon we might just do OK this season.
I did contemplate it ahaha! I just thought that it would be harsh on 2012/13's League 2 goalkeeper of the season to be left on the bench.
Going back to the corners debate, I would like to see a return of the cleverly worked corners we used to employ under Peter Taylor - we used to get a crazy number of goals from them! Think Hessy briefly re-introduced them in his two recent seasons, but it was never quite the same. Mind you, you do only get a maximum of one goal a game from them, after which the opposition work out what's going on!
