@SimonPeach: Victor Wanyama set to complete #SaintsFC move on Wednesday, according to the Mail. No wonder his agent didn't pick up - gone or negotiating.

Why can't we sign Banega and Wanyama? Victor to battle with Cork & Ever to oust Davis... Simples.

I follow him for news, he's usually one of the first with match reports and interviews during the season. As far as transfers go though, he knows less than I do.

@FourthOfficial_: Wanyama signing for Saints for £12m, surprised no one else went for him!

Assuming we get him, this is Nicola's technique. Players aren't sure about us...we are not their life long dream...this means we have to go in high to get the selling team on our side. It also makes competing teams nervous...no chance of a bargain, so may decide not to take a chance.

It does seem a little strange to me that somebody who seems to be so highly thought of, seems to have had only genuine offers from two of the less perceived glamorous clubs in the EPL. I would have a thought if he was that good a top 6 club could have got involved. Fran makes a good point about pitching high, but that also means that we may get our man but at a premium.

If thats what we have to do at the moment to go to the next level, so be it! Seems a tad concerning though.

As I said earlier in this thread or the Wanyama one, bidding maybe even above the asking price gives you exclusivity when you negotiate a contract. We've probably saved the extra we paid for his transfer by refusing to pay those agents' fees and offering him less money than we might have had to had another team been allowed to speak with him as well. When you're perceived as a smallish club it's important to make sure other clubs don't get the chance to turn his head, so bidding high makes sense.
