The Man U Watney Cup game with Best, Law and Charlton was a bigger draw in 71 (att. 34, 007 for a pre season night game)

Didn't say he was outstanding that day. But saw him on other occasions when he was. His ability on what were terrible pitches by today's standards whilst being subjected to tackling which would see a flood of red cards nowadays going unpunished makes you wonder what he would have done playing today.

Does anyone else remember the Northern Ireland match being plyed in the afternoon? We had made plans to truant school to watch Best play and take the consequences but the school was closed as well so we were ok. However, maybe I've got it wrong and BP had power at night. It was still an honour to watch him. If you want to see how good he was, find the Sheffield United match from about the same time. He walked round their entire defence before placing the ball precisely ino the net. MOTD used it in their opening credits for ages. He was a genius. I don't think their is anyone playing in the Premier League today who is as good as he was. With the protection given to plaayers today, he would have been at least as good as Christiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo never had to face Norman Hunter, Jack Charlton or Ron Harris.

Just randomly clicking through stuff and I noticed Boothferry Park held this European qualifier in 1972. George Best and Pat Jennings in the N.I team. Before my time so wondered if anyone on here was in the 20k crowd?

Yes i was. I was also at the Leeds Utd v. Tottenham First Division league match (PL in new money) back at that time when Leeds were not allowed to play home matches @ Elland Road. Quality game & players on both sides.

Leeds had to play at BP, Hillsborough and Leads Road, Huddersfield, following a pitch invasion the season below at Bellend Road, when they lost 2-1 to WBA with the winning goal about 2 miles offside.

The night when Leeds lost the title to Arsenal was the same night they played CITY in a friendly at BP. Arsenal beat Spurs 1-0 at WHL to win the title with Leeds runners up. 1971 I think.

Did anyone go to the Leeds v. Sunderland 4th or 5th round cup replay at BP?...Great game....Leeds won 2-1..The ground was packed with Mackams.

Brian Kidd 2 goals. Think it was my first game at BP.

I was there, it was a Wednesday afternoon with a kick off around 2.00 clock. Don't recall it being an epic and it was fairly gloomy at the end. I saw Best several times, a genuine great, but like all players he had his quiet days.

Wasn't at this match - at Uni at the time - wasn't it played on an afternoon because of the miners strikes during the Ted Heath Government when industry was on a 3 or 4 day week?

Was at the Watney Cup game and went the round before at Peterboro. City more than matched ManU that night - Best Charlton Law and all - first penalty shoot out with Mckechnie taking one and hitting the bar.

Also went to the Leeds Spurs game - think it as a 1- 1 draw with Alan Gilzean scoring - maybe wrong. One of three games I believe played at an away venue because of a ban for Leeds - can't recall exactly why. Think the BP attendance was the biggest - circa 29k?

Better. I would take Best in his prime over Messi any day of the week. For those who saw Best back in the 60/70's will know what i mean.

Yes saw them all. We were lucky back then to get the games we got @ BP. The Anglo-Italian cup was also a fun period at that time.

Most folks know the players who played for Leeds that night but Tottenham also had many great players. GK Pat Jennings, Joe Kinnear(todays laughing stock) and the late Cyril Knowles, rugged centre back Mike England(wales capt), Alan Gilzean and Martin Chivers uP front to name but a few more legends of the game at that time.

Hardly. A very large majority of people living in Hull back then were Leeds fans. FACT. Hence why we have so many Hull whites in this area. Leeds were the big force back at that time in english football. The Don Revie era was in full swing. FACT.

Leeds did play Sunderland at Boothferry Park but it was in and FA Cup 5th Round Replay in 1967. The crowd was about 40000. I wasn't one of them!

I think Elland Road was closed for the Spurs game because someone in the crowd threw a knife into the goal. I think they had a three match ban and played the games in other Yorkshire grounds.

It may seem odd to the younger ones on this thread when we of a certain age go on about the defenders of those times. But it really was the case that lumps were regularly kicked out of opponents and hardly anyone battered an eyelid. Today I'm afraid they are not as robust when players seem to get injured even in training for goodness sake, even a goalie was substituted during a warm up I believe. Referees would have had to have the red card permanently in their hands back then but I don't actually remember that many. The famous one is Billy Bremner and Kevin Keegan battling it out in the Charity Shield Match, but when you get the likes of Manchester City's goalie Bert Troutmann playing in a cup final with a broken neck, the result of a tackle going for the ball on the ground I think, and didn't even know then today's hard tackles barely register on the hardness scale.

Thanks Agro. Interesting read. Relations between the two clubs were clearly not very good and the ' dodgy penalty ' which decided the match only resulted in some serious trouble on and off the pitch.

Never realised things between the two teams was so bad.
