It might be to do with us not wishing to over speculate regarding our signings and wind ourselves up into a frenzy.... We've been sensible in our business so far this summer going along quietly and very understated and haven't been held to ransom by clubs as we have in other years.. Also, unlike this board we have got separate threads for some transfer talk as each signing/topic has been worthy of it's own thread
to be fair though, you can't really be held to ransom when you have no money, and it's well known that ipswich haven't got the funds to spend. at least they are trying to get the club in order with FFP, unlike some other clubs in that league.
That is true, although it wouldn't surprise me if Mick did actually have some money available (albeit a little)... and that he's just playing his cards close to his chest as he knows that there are some good free signings around and will get them in first and bring in a couple of other signings when everyone thinks we have nothing to spend..... In other words complete opposite to Jewell who mentioned his targets and therefore other clubs either upped their asking price or others beat us to the punch.. That is just a hunch though.. But I'm confident he'll get a few more decent players in the door by the end of July though clearly not of the 3.2m or 8.5m variety Redmond btw is a great piece of business
From what I remember of Doye He only had reasonable joy, While at Copenhagen So in the words of ***in Don´t bother with stealing this boy.
Fair point - it's been so long since we were a buying rather than a selling club and it is nice to have positive news to get into a frenzy over!
kopr, your season will rely entirely on mick mccarthy's managerial skills. it certainly won't be down to skill from the players! you'll have a hard working, organised team but is that enough to get out of that league? i always think you need a bit more than that. i expect you'll have a minimal amount to spend but it will be very small and dwarfed by the majority of clubs in the championship. getting jet and chopra off the wage bill would free up funds but you have to have takers for them. heard rumours of bristol city interested in jet a week or so ago - the o'driscoll/doncaster connection bringing that about i expect. would he drop a league? not sure. chopra is a waster and you're basically trying to flog a dead horse with him. he probably had a bet on the dead horse
From Denmark I can´t actually think of any unless it be Christian Eriksen, but he does blow awfully hot and cold, and incidentally the two that Villa have picked up, Okore and Helenius, will find it tough making the grade imo, and Cardiff have paid way over the top for Cornelius, who although being a bright talent, is nowhere near the finished article yet.
Your first sentence could easily read; what's a shame about that deal is that it shows that hughton could not relate to possibly the clubs brightest prospect (Steer). if he was such a great manager as you, or indeed JRfan would have us believe, why would a young, exciting player, who is extremely talented and has worked with the guy for a season, choose to leave the club to join his previous manager? Now Certain managers are a good fit for certain clubs and certain players. All Redmond has illustraited is that he likes his management. Could that be because he got his break from CH? Brum had an OK season whilst he was there? May be the new manager was less personnable to him or in general? We don't really know, however it doesn't suddenly make CH's football brazillian in flair and watchability! Redmond has joined but how many other players have we signed that previously worked with him as manager? Could it be that Davies was asked to join but thought " I'm not joining up with that wally again!". Now I don't want to get into the same old arguments from the end of last season (though some, supers and carrabuh seem intent on dragging it through the whole summer!), but he has money and he's spending it. On face value, fairly well. I will hope that we will play better football next season, but until I see it or perhaps see a signing in the middle of the park who could initiate some better passing football. I think we may see a similar style that is defense first and to easily defaults to hoofing it. I might be wrong, I hope I'm wrong. But one young signing doesn't change diddly squat because what ever manager we had in charge i'm sure DM would give them the same brief, buy young and hungry who are good with potential to be great(and potential resale value). Bah!
Your post wasn't directed at me, so forgive me for butting in. I think the players bought would indicate his tactics this season are going to be more towards attacking play but I do agree we need a decent couple of players who are going to pass into the box, without them the latest signings will be pointless and unfortunately we haven't seen any rumours indicating the purchase of such players.
Can someone please explain to me why CH would sign Van Wolfswinkle and Redmond with a view to playing a long ball defensive game? It is the 5th of July and we have already got two excellent footballers in the bank. I don't know what people expect of the management. In his time with us how many duff signings has CH made? How many did not strenthen the side or the squad? I am struggling to think of one. Last seasons job was clearly sort the defence and it looks like this window he is finishing the job by adding to the attack. You can criticise the order in which he has done things and the style of play resulting but we finished in a decent posiiton last season and have made two excellent additons (including breaking our transfer record) to the squad. Surely to goodness this must be pretty positive news? If we signed Mata and Hazard I get the feeling that some posters on the forum would still think that CH was planiing on using them as target men or defensive shields.
Surely Toivonen is and Fer is a 'box to box' type of midfielder, supposedly in the Viera mould. So the rumours are out there, even if the signatures are not forthcoming - yet
yawn. here they come! it does bemuse me that there is still such an underlying fear amongst a handful of fans that hughton doesn't know what he's doing. steer was given opportunities by lambert. he is further up the pecking order at villa. hughton offered the boy a new deal but he wanted to move on. i don't think you can say that is a sign of a manager who couldn't relate to a player - more that a young player sees a better opportunity at another club with his former manager. he's 2nd choice at villa, 3rd at worst. at norwich he's 4th choice at best. completely different situation altogether. nobody else came in for him. redmond had clubs chasing him. as for davies, do you not think we'd have made a bid for him if we wanted him? we never put in a bid. hull got him for a good fee. if we'd wanted him we'd have made an offer but we didn't so i fail to see the relevance. how many players who have played under hughton are we going to be in the market for? the good newcastle players will be wanted by bigger clubs than us (ben arfa etc) while redmond was probably the best player he had at birmingham and we got him. to describe birmingham as having 'an ok' season whilst he was there is barking mad. they played 66 games that year and were only one goal from wembley despite never spending a penny, losing the majority of his premier league players, being one of the highest scorers and having the one of the best defences. what part of that season says 'ok' to you?
in my opinion, some people were born moaners. it obviously requires something very special to get them excited. glass half full? glass half empty? to them it's irrelevant how full the glass is because the contents taste sour
Just for the Recorc I am very happy with the Redmond signing and the direction we appear to be going in, my glass is much more than half full! I have no doubt we will bring in another 2 -3 players who will continue to improve the playing squad and the starting 11. I would like to know who we are after and sign them as soon as possible but only because I am impatient. If this did happen I would then be impatiently waiting for the first game......... which I have poorly planned to be out of the country for!
all our players seem like 'boys' now. getting old!! on to transfer business, philip cocu has announced he 'expects' ola toivonen to sign for norwich but the player and norwich are still in talks
