I know the armed forces are needed but the length of time and expense mopping up seems extreme. How long will troops have to spend in Iraq and Afghanistan

Just as long as we remember to "put those bloody lights out Mainwaring!" I think we'll be fine <laugh>

For the benefit of our younger readers that's from Dad's Army <ok>

Can't be bothered reading all the posts on this subject, so for those interested I am aware that one of the stands may be renamed Sky Bet Stand, with advertising all over the stand. This will bring in a **** load of cash to the club, and Haigh is chuffed to bits with the deal.

Brilliant! We get a load of money despite Sky Bet being oblivious to the fact that all four of our stands already have names.

KKGA Day? You reckon. You can't go and fight a war without us to do the hard yards for you. Remind me, who was it who did the low level flying and scud hunting during the 1st Gulf was because USAF & your supposed SF weren't up to the job?

How soon we all forget eh?

Remind us all again the reason German is not the official language in England.

Many thanks.

<cheers>

He had just spent £40m defending them from the French, and was trying to recoup some of it. (And they wanted to be defended, btw, don't try the "plague on all your houses" line, its not true). You need to realise how much Americans have allowed themselves to be indoctrinated with superficial versions of their history of this period. Its a nice fairy story, and a lot of nations have myths about they were born, going back to Rome and Romulus and Remus and before - but fairy story it is. I read a very good book on this period when I was in Canada - the author was American, btw - and it really was not quite as you are force fed from kindergaten onwards.

Fair comment that patriotism is indoctrinated into Americans. :emoticon-0111-blush

Nevertheless, we still kicked King George's Arse all the way home. <ok>

Because Hitler had the tactcal awareness of Warnock and in the military equivalent of hoofball attacked Russia. The war on two fronts was never winnable. Why whats your theory?

That was my theory, exactly! <doh>

<laugh>

I am not a huge student of World War II but you may wish to check the timing of the various significant events of the war.

<cheers>

Jonny I'm sure you must've been taught in American schools that the United States won WWII single handedly <whistle>

even though Britain stood alone for three years until you lot finally showed up, and only then because both Germany and Japan declared war on you first <doh>

Anyway I'm with Olof, if it wasn't for the English Channel we'd probably have gone the same way as France, Poland etc <ok>

In no particular order:

1. 20 million Russian dead
2. The English Channel and Royal Navy
3. The Royal Air Force
4. Roosevelt realising it was in American interests (not anyone elses, note) to ensure Hitler did not win
5. some crass strategic errors by the Germans
6. Bletchley Park
7. The inability of the British to learn foreign languages
8. American money and manpower
9. Oh and the fact the British didn't just give in, despite the US ambassador sending briefings home saying we were about to

I could continue - I am making the same point as before, most historical events can have very different interpretations - all based on the facts, all with an element of truth to them - depending on what you want to believe. "America saved the world" actually has a some credence, but I find the "childrens picture book" version of history that y'all seem to believe in, despite having some of the best historians there are who would tell you its rather more complicated, really is odd. You all need to get out more.

I'm no great historian, but my understanding was that the invasion of Britain was delayed by Hitler, as he believed that he could 'work with' King Edward (or whoever it was). Huge scandal that was kept under wraps for over half a century. Out King was a Nazi sympathiser.

Btw, according to all the movies I've watched, America have won all the wars, even the ones that happened before they existed! <whistle>
