No taxation without representation? Here's a little 'history' for you. Most people in Gt Britain didn't have the right to vote at that time and the leading traitors in British America knew that. No they didn't want to pay taxes to the mother country because they got greedy and wanted it for themselves. Traitors y'see?

History is a funny old thing. I went to Washington recently, and went on a tourist trip where the guide (who had no idea there were Brits in the audience, like all good ol' American boys he assumed they were all from far flung parts like Carolina and Maine). Anyway, when he got to the bit where the British popped in during 1812 to say "how do" and burn the original White House down, I felt a truly terrible person for coming from such a dastardly nation.....................
except................... then I went to Canada, and went on a really great tour of the Fort York museum (York being the name for Topronto in 1812) and got the Canadian version........... earlier in 1812, the Americans came to York, the capital of British America, and burnt down the government buildings, for which the subsequent burning down of the White House was simply a retaliation..........
Now, I don't know which version is correct, and it does not really matter, but it does illustrate how the same underlying facts can be subtly (and not so subtly) woven into completely different stories.

In all seriousness, people came to America to escape the puritanical tyranny of Europe. Why would anyone over there think they could continue to tax them from afar?
One could argue who the greedy party was all day and night but what exactly were the settlers getting for these added taxes Geroge wanted to place on them?
Maybe he's getting some tinpot club mugged to get the dross Colin brought in to pay their wages for a season long loan.

He had just spent £40m defending them from the French, and was trying to recoup some of it. (And they wanted to be defended, btw, don't try the "plague on all your houses" line, its not true). You need to realise how much Americans have allowed themselves to be indoctrinated with superficial versions of their history of this period. Its a nice fairy story, and a lot of nations have myths about they were born, going back to Rome and Romulus and Remus and before - but fairy story it is. I read a very good book on this period when I was in Canada - the author was American, btw - and it really was not quite as you are force fed from kindergaten onwards.
KKGA Day? You reckon. You can't go and fight a war without us to do the hard yards for you. Remind me, who was it who did the low level flying and scud hunting during the 1st Gulf was because USAF & your supposed SF weren't up to the job?
Not meaning to rain on your parade, but at what cost to the average taxpayer in England are the armed forces. Much like the US, I've wondered to what better uses could the billions be spent, especially when you see the state os the world economy? As an outside looking in, just curious are you chaps all pleased with where a good chunk of your taxes go?

Personally I'd rather a good chunk of my taxes go to our armed forces than towards foreign aid to countries who don't even need it.
Total waste of money, why do countries who are wealthy enough to spend money on developing nuclear arms need our aid?
And typically being the soft touch that we are, we give more as a percentage of GDP than anyone else

Countries need armed forces. Simple as that. Ours are actually underfunded, our troops often don't get the equipment they need.

And Eire you wouldn't be saying that if all that Korea/US stuff happened not that long ago, then everyone in every country would be saying the armed forces are underfunded
