People on the Beeb are arguing about Laura Robson being Australian and whether she can and should represent Britain as a result. Which is a completely stupid and pointless argument to have. Just because you happen to be born somewhere and lived there for a short amount of time doesn't mean you're necessarily of that nationality. It's like, I was born in Surrey but like **** am I a Surrey boy.

Who cares about who she represents? It's not like football where nationality actually matters for your team. Olympics I suppose is a different question but if they're satisfied she's British, then she's British.

Your nationality isn't completely down to what's a piece of a paper and certainly not down to what your parent's nationality is. If I had moved to America and had a kid, he or she wouldn't be British. If I then moved back to Britain not long afterwards, he wouldn't be American. While I guess you can't claim to be a nationality you're not a citizen of, ones nationality is more based on the country which had the biggest impact during your formative years and the country you feel a connection to and feel loyalty to. As she was only in Australia for 18 months, clearly and understandably she doesn't have much loyalty or connection to Australia.

She considers herself British, so that settles it. She played tennis for GB in the Olympics, so she obviously qualifies as British. Remember you can claim your grandparents nationality.
