Saints set to approach Cagliari for Davide Astori: http://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/seri...concorrenza-inglese-per-milan-e-napoli-459955

TRANSLATION

EXCLUSIVE TMW - Astori, English competition for Milan and Naples

The name of Davide Astori is clearly to the fore in the chronicles of the market in recent weeks. The Cagliari defender is in the crosshairs of all companies currently looking for a central defender thick like blue, and negotiations connected with him are always pretty hot. In particular, the Naples maintains a position of relative advantage over the competition, although Milan is always very strong and this lens. The novelty is rather the inclusion of several Premier League teams that are proving to be interested in the player. The Southampton in particular, but not only, it seems ready to deliver Cellino a very interesting proposal. The developments in this regard will not wait.

reading just signed an American MF who has been playing in Germany. Nigel must be enjoying all this rapid activity<laugh>

Danny Williams is really more German than American. His father is a US citizen but he was born and raised in Germany and has always played there. He had never been to the US until he joined the National Team. Also, he's not very good.

Anyone else struggling to see us signing another CB?

Depends on what Pochettino thinks of Fonte and Hooiveld. Personally I don't think either is good enough would prefer the choice of Astori, Lovren, Yoshida and Forren. If we have the money and it improves the squad then why not, it doesn't look like a priority to me though.

CB isn't a priority right now, and would prefer us to sign players in other more important positions before going back to CB if we have money left over

Astori would be good and I wouldn't say no to another CB. Yoshida and Lovren is OK, Lovren and Astori, however, would give us a good chance of a top half finish, providing we improve our attack adequately.

I like Astori, certainly a lot more than I like Lovren, so I'd not be against it necessarily, provided it doesn't stop funds being given to other areas. If they're sold on Lovren, then as far as I'm concerned that's CBs done unless there are a couple of exits.

Astori would still be a great buy, would any of you complain if we signed him?
Yes cb is not a priority but we can still sign other players you know.

I can still see Astori coming in, Pochettino didn't really seem to like the look of Fonte and we all know what Hooiveld is like.

Thing is we have no clue how much we have to spend, Goring Crook thinks 30m why I've been told around 40m. But it wouldn't surprise me if we spent 50m.

Or 10m on both?

Well if we pretend the budget is £40m ish... take off 8 for Lovren, so 32. Then 10 on both would take it down to 12, to be used on FB, CM and striker depth? Though we can assume they want more than depth at CM, being linked with the likes of Banega and Wanyama, so assumedly it'd use most of the 12... eh, **** it, I'm not in charge of the money and I'd be chuffed with what Astori brings as a player.

Let's not forget players may leave as well. Sharp, Fonte and Hooiveld could bring in another £5m or so.
