99% of football transfer gossip/news/leaks come from the players agent. Either for simple publicity, or to attract other clubs into a bidding war.
The sum total of "respected football journalism" consists of ringing/texting/emailing the players agent and asking what the latest is, although I suspect in most cases, its the agent doing that to the journo.

I've only been listening to his show for maybe a year and a half, Absolute Radio, the breakfast show. I've never heard him say anything negative about Southampton.

I like the idea that you can judge a player by the teams that are after him. On one level it works, an interest from ManU etc suggests that a player might be worth considering (though each team's needs are different), but are they suggesting that Arsenal shouldn't go for Rooney if Stoke had made enquiries. They also seem to have missed the comment that Wanyama might consider going to an intermediate side en route to a top club....the example cited is RVP signing for Arsenal before going to Man U!!
