It's ok Supers, we are all aware that this is Guru being Guru! I think the term "deluded" was invented just for him, he always thinks we're going to bite on his cleverley disguised hook!

Just to prove my point about Supers 7 untouchables club rubbish.

Only once (last season) did those 7 clubs actually take the top 7 places in the very least last 5 years!

Be good if Fellaini and Baines do go and it might take time to get Everton playing the way Martínez wants them to, so it could be a good time to play them, plus we've got a good record against them in the past 2 season. So I'm happy with the starting fixture :)

Tough last 5 games, but I think we'll be safe by then.

that is entirely down to FINANCE, just as i keep telling you!!! fine, top 7 allows for the occasional squiffy entrée because we didn't always have a 'man city', so can you tell me, other than aston villa (who spent massive), newcastle (who are hardly paupers), and the one shock inclusion bolton, who were in an era where there was a definitive top four, not six, the clubs who have finished in the top six in the past ten years?

i will do it for you:

2013 - man utd, man city, chelsea, arsenal, tottenham, everton
2012 - man city, man utd, arsenal, tottenham, newcastle, chelsea
2011 - man utd, chelsea, man city, arsenal, tottenham, liverpool, everton
2010 - chelsea, man utd, arsenal, tottenham, man city, aston villa
2009 - man utd, liverpool, chelsea, arsenal, everton, aston villa
2008 - man utd, chelsea, arsenal, liverpool, everton, aston villa
2007 - man utd, chelsea, liverpool, arsenal, tottenham, everton
2006 - chelsea, man utd, liverpool, arsenal, tottenham, newcastle
2005 - chelsea, arsenal, man utd, everton, liverpool, bolton
2004 - arsenal, chelsea, man utd, liverpool, newcastle, aston villa

so with the exception of bolton and newcastle last year, every single club has spent mega bucks. norwich had the second lowest budget last season and the lowest the year before <ok>

even a team like villa, who were the third biggest spenders IN EUROPE one season, were still unable to break the old guard! it's a closed shop, just how the big clubs want it. they get all the money. its no different to the premier league compared to the championship in that regard - we get all the millions, you lot can fight over 50p and an old newspaper. it's totally warped. if you go back to the 80s or certainly the 70s, i bet it was a different top four every single season - you may have had the same winners quite often but other teams had a chance. that chance has gone now unless you get a billionaire who splashes the cash without a care.

Is it safe to come out? Have the children finished their argument??

    Excellent.

    Well, back to subject.

I think it's a pretty decent first game, and a reasonable first 6 matches. I reckon we probably need to be getting 10 points from those six games.

There isn't a month where we seem to have a run that makes you wonder where a point is coming from, but the run in is a horror show. I do think we will be safe well before that point though.

agree with that. i think overall, the fixture computer has been quite kind - the final four games will get the headlines but that is pretty much the only part of the season where you'd have to say we look likely to lose two in a row.

This argument is pointless because Guru is using a straw man argument. Superman has generalised, therefore it is easy to pick out the exceptions as Guru is doing and is broadly unchallengeable. It doesn't alter the fact that, undeniably, Supers generalisation stands the test of time.

I would go so far as to argue there are three leagues:
    1. The Top Three
    2. The Champions League/Europa League battlers
    3. The Relegation Contenders

There being three leagues doesn't preclude teams moving up or down a league (as they do in the official leagues!) and this can happen quickly. For example, City were only in league 2 for about three seasons, now they're in league 1. There is also a vague blur between league 2 and 3 in the form of Swansea. Another tricky one is Newcastle. Interestingly, teams that have broken into league 2 surprisingly, have tended to really suffer the next season (e.g. Stoke, Newcastle, etc.)

This is not a pointless exercise - the reason it is interesting is that you can broadly predict which teams will be in which leagues at the beginning of each season. This highlights how low the mobility is in the Premier League. By contrast, mobility is very high in the Championship, with it being difficult to predict where teams will be at all, other than saying, e.g., Leicester will probably be top half and may well be promotion candidates.

It's been around since the beginning I believe, and on other boards (e.g. Newcastle I think) people use it a lot more.

    I'm trying to catch Dave...
