Nothing to do with NCFC, but I see Lambert at Villa has already identified and signed three new players, Aleksandr Tonev, Jores Okore and Leandro Bacuna to his squad with a fourth, Nicklas Helenius, expected to arrive this week.

He's now showing interest in Antonio Luna from Sevilla. You can say what you want about players and managers being on holiday, etc, but similar to when he was here, PL likes to get in early in the market, 1) to get his first choice targets and 2) to avoid being dragged into the inevitable bidding war later in the window. Way to go, in my opinion <ok>

The longer time goes on, the more people will be aware of his reluctance to sign an extended contract for Celtic. Shame Hughton couldn't have put a down payment on him in January and sort out the finer points when everyone gets back from hols.
Otherwise every club bar the mega rich top 6 are going to be after him.

True, but given the lack of significant difference between most of the clubs outside of the top six, if you were a striker which club would you choose:
(1) the one that says they've been fighting for your signature for two or three transfer windows; or
(2) the one that says they've put in a bid because they've notice you're going on the cheap?

Of course, it's not that simple, and it will probably go down to wages and possibly location. I think that we can compete, in wage terms, with most of the clubs outside the top seven or so bar maybe Newcastle. Of course, the likes of Villa and Southampton might have higher caps, but I think they're both pretty sensibly run now and would be looking at offering a player like Hooper a similar amount to us.

i don't know what our wage cap will be for this coming season, but i imagine that it will be somewhat higher than it was this last season. saying that, there is surely some scope for paying a little extra to a player that we really want, so that realistically teams like those mentioned should not be able to pay more than we do. unless silly money is involved.

PLambert was always pretty hot in the transfer markets. He showed last season at Villa he can spot a player with the signing of Benteke.

Very true. But my point was that he identifies and makes a move for targets before the rest of the world becomes embroiled in a bidding war. I know it's an exaggerated example but just think back to deadline day a couple of years ago - Carroll to Liverpoo, £35m and Torres to Chelski, £50m.
The early bird, they do say......

I take your point, but those weren't bidding wars. They were desperation buys, which is another thing that Lambert avoids. Currently it would seem that Becchio is in the same category

I follow Ed Butterworth as another NCFC fan but I found out over the weekend that he might be Ian Butterworths son.

If we sign Capel then the missing pieces of our jigsaw are really coming together.
