We have nearly signed Cabaye who was reported to be linked with Aston Villa, Valencia and Lyon who are all "big" teams (maybe not villa) however he chose us who finished 12th and are not in Europe unlike Valencia and Lyon.

Today we continue to be linked with big named players e.g. Berbatov.

So my question is why do talented players come and are linked with a team that has finished 12th in the league? According to Nufc, we now have a wage limit on so this must also put of players but we continue to be linked.

However their are many attractive things about us e.g. the fans, stadium, passion, our past and reputation. Possibly our good reputation of treating players like Ben Arfa where we have been recognised in France.

Anyway please share your thoughts :)

Its a weird one as I would have thought the previous league position would be crucial in making the decision.

I believe reputation does come into it, and since the PL is well advertised, they would have seen games like Villa 6-0, Sunderland 5-1, West Ham 5-0 and of course Arsenal 4-4, as well as drawing with Chelsea and Man Utd, and beating Arsenal away. They all seem positive on paper. Previous French players for NUFC helps, as well as Ben Arfa currently being here.

Its a weird one, but I am glad we look able to still pull off some great deals.

Donna Air and Cheryl Cole as well as the starring role in Goal*!

* Note: Santi still tells everyone who will listen how much he loves Newcastle and bemoans that he ever left in his quest to play for Mexico in the World Cup via Real Madrid and was seemingly dropped from the last instalment.

outside the big four, Newcastle have had more seasons in Europe than any other Premiership team, so our exposure and profile abroad is higher than you would expect.

plus 3rd biggest stadium in the Premiership

In France, the Ben Arfa thing has been very beneficial, also our history/stadium/fanbase/decent wages come into it. Also if players look at our season they'll see we're just a good striker away from 8th this season IMO.

I agree with all this ^

I also think that because we had such a good 1st season back in the Premiership, Pardew can sell the club to players by showing them that we have good foundations on which to build the team on. A solid squad with the additions of people like Cabaye, Gameiro, N'Zogbia and Gervinho has got to look good to prospective signings, making them see that things at SJP could be very exciting in the next few years.

Obviously as well as being known for our massive fanbase and loyal supporters with a huge stadium we're still proavly a 'bigger' club than the likes of Stoke, even though they finished above us. Also, someone said on the Lille forum yesterday that we're a club on the rise, after shedding our other players like Owen we're building back our reputation which might seem attractive to players.

Us > toon fans who always reward a committed skilled player with a fanatical intense following
- must be nice to feel so wanted!! Who wouldn't want 50k+ toon fans chanting your name!?

  • Huge worldwide following - and I mean huge compared to a lot of EPL clubs
  • A reputation because of all the times we played in Europe - one of the most well-known from England
  • Third biggest stadium in England behind Arsenal and Man Utd
  • Third biggest attendance
  • 18th highest average stadium attendance in Europe, ahead of Man City, Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea, Porto, Roma, Valencia and other teams
  • Reputation in France because of how we handled Ben Arfa
  • Reputation in France and across some areas of Europe because of some of the players we've signed over the years
  • A decent wage
  • A top notch stadium and training facilities
  • Nice city which most players seem to love
  • Ambition
  • Plus the general reputation we have as being very passionate about football

Newcastle is a funny old club. We might only be mid-table (and were relegated last season) but we're seen MUCH more differently compared to the likes of West Brom, Stoke, Bolton, Fulham and other clubs around us.

Thanks for all the replys but this ^ i think summed it up in one for all us :)

A major factor is if reports are to be belived is we are paying in full for a player instead of instalments, the selling club is more likely to see that as a positive and try to influence the player into coming to us.

Also helps the players we are after have friends who play for the culb (Tiote, Ben Arfa etc.)

One more!

The Big AL / no9 legacy? When you hear players saying their hero was Shearer
when they were a kid - they clearly have NUFC on their radar with his commitment
and love for this club.
