Yes, that and lack of ability! He reminded me of a pinball machine at times.

I'm not so sure it was lack of ability, I felt he could have done a job in the Championship.

He was scoring for fun in League One.

Lambert probably would be better in cm than jwp. Ward Prowse would be the last person I would pick to play against a team sitting deep. His biggest weakness is creativity which you would need to break down a team sitting deep.

Cork is a much better player and at 23 has enough development in him to keep ward prowse out of the team for at least a few seasons imo by which time both will probably be struggling to make the starting line up.

JWP reminds of Schneiderlin at the same age. You could see they can pick out a pass and have the football intelligence, it's just the physicality and the defensive skills that are lacking. I felt like Schneiderlin was best used as a deep-lying playmaker and couldn't handle the defensive duties required in our setup and would therefore need a transfer to realize his potential.

Schneiderlin turned out just fine. JWP could learn to tackle as Schneiderlin has, or he could learn to play up front. But all of our midfielders bar Ramirez are the same way. They have their strengths and weaknesses but overall are well-rounded. You wouldn't peg them as strictly defensive midfielders or attacking midfielders but with their energy and intelligence they get the job done.

I think JWP could use a loan, but if not MP was actually using him quite a bit as a sub off the bench. He could start to take over some of Do Prado's time as well end up playing most of the second half in most of our games.

I often wonder what people see when they go to games reading some of the waffle spouted. Based on what facts would Rickie, a target man, be better suited in CM over a technically gifted player, with a good pass who has a good stamina and reading of the game. Face it mate, you're talking absolute cack.

Yes, he is, at the moment? Are you so short sighted in your views that it is not possible for JWP to become an accomplished footballer because Cork is 5 years older? I gave my opinion of when we can blood him in as a player, and you're reply was along the lines of 'James is too young to play at the moment so we should sell him for a short term fix.' I gather you have never studied Economics or Busniness. There is going to be a long period of time between us now and being too good not to consider James a hot prospect. He is evidently held in high regard at Southampton, and plays in our strongest area, the fact he started 4 games is incredble. I can't believe your view, as a Saints fan. You know we are a club centralised around our ambition to succeed through the gains of our investments in the academy..

I can't believe someone would suggest selling JWP. He is going to be one hell of a player.

A loan maybe, but even that would be unlikely. I've been saying it since I first saw him play for the U18s, he is going to be special.

Saints are not great users of the loaning out system, apart from when a player is already on his way out of Saints. I think that when a player is considered a real prospect...they prefer that he doesn't go elsewhere and learn bad habits.

Whilst that's all well and good, it's not something I agree with.

Apart from Punch which was punishment I can't think of any players we have loaned out and who have come back to stake a regular first team spot? Anyone?

It would be nice if he could go to a good champ team for half a season where they play proper football and he is virtually guaranteed game time. But finding a club that meets this criteria is tough. He would certainly get time on the pitch in L1, but would you want him battling with a bunch of thugs week in week out? Mind you, didn't do Schneid any harm! Perhaps reading, adkins can bring him on then he can return in the later stages of next season when we may have injury worries.

In short, I like him. Especially for his attitude. I think its far too early to say he won't be a fantastic player and if I had to put money on it I'd say he will!

That's because we've been in League One/Championship. Any younger players who could benefit from a year or two of starting in the lower divisions already got to do that with Saints. I think that is a major reason Schneiderlin and Lallana (who did once get a 1 month loan to Bournemouth) have turned out so well. Puncheon actually got loaned to a division above Saints, which is pretty unusual.

Not in recent years, but Lallana, Surman, Jones were all loaned out, and later were successes for us.

Those loans were all made when we were last a PL club, and thus we were loaning to Championship and L1 clubs (whilst being in the fortunate position of having better quality players for the first team).

In recent years however, we've either needed the kids for the first team, have been losing them to bigger teams, or been loaning them to low L1 or L2 clubs.

And to be blunt, some of kids in very recent years that we've loaned out just simply haven't been good enough.

All of those loans were under a previous regime...doesn't happen now.

Norwich bringing in some good players. Wolfswinkel and now close to signing Ola Toivonen from PSV.

Without the ability to have "B" teams, there's no way Saints can realize their vision of being academy players into the first team without loaning them out.

I think that's what the u21 league is for. Saints won't hold on to all their youngsters...only the top notch ones are good enough for us now...the others will be moved on or released.

Barca don't loan out their players. If we're modelling ourselves on them, I think we'll probably look to keep hold of them and bring them up in line with "The Southampton Way"

I really do not see why JWP wouldn't be loaned out to gain regular first team experience........Saints would be careful to whom they loaned him, it would be to a footballing side I'm sure. I think he was not loaned out before as he was needed as a "just in case player"..........If we buy a midfielder then he may well be loaned out to a progressive footballing side to develop him further.
