Shows how up to date the Premier League are that he was listed as a player. Paul Scholes, Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen and Steve Harper are listed as "released" although they're now retired, whilst Kolo Toure and Danny Wilson have already agreed to move to new clubs on free transfers.

It has been suggested that Defoe for Bentenke will be a mistake as the latter is untried with only one season in the CL whereas Defoe is proven. Whilst I agree that we should offload Defoe it should not be for Bentenke. Well done to the member who suggested that Bentenke might be a one season wonder, perryman was it?

Personally I'd want there to be two very high quality, proven strikers brought in before we consider getting a few million for Defoe. If Defoe's happy to have to fight for his place and maybe "only" be an impact sub I'm not sure what the point of selling him would be. What would we get? Something like 7m? So would we rather have a) 7m; or b) a player who's proven, who loves to play for the club, is settled and who epitomises the old cliche of "natural goal-scorer"? If Spurs need a goal then I can't imagine many other players I'd want on the bench.

Sign some player who's happy to sit on the bench, not gonna want higher wages than Defoe, is not going to cost 15-20-odd million and will actually offer more coming off the bench when we need a goal? That's a tough ask.

There have been times when Defoe was by far my third-favourite striker at Spurs and was just waiting for someone or other to offer 10m. But it'd take two very good strikers to be brought in before I'd want to see the back of him now.

    I agree, Lenny. <ok>

£7m as you say, wouldn't go very far. Then there's the wages that we have to contend with, that comes with these "modern day" strikers. They all want £100k+ a week and the fees are insane, thanks to the likes of City etc not giving a **** how much they spend.
We moan about him, but we'd struggle to replace him with anyone as good as him for the same money and wages.

TMT I did say that , it's a common trait for new overseas players in the PL first season gangbusters - second the defenders and coaches have worked them out.

I agree. Jelavic was all the rage at the end of last season, but has been cack this season. Will be fascinating to see how Michu does next season.

Strong media reports over the past couple of days linking Benny with a move to Fenerbache. I think there is some legs in this one as it's pretty much an open secret he and Villas-Boas don't see eye to eye. Benny still has his critics, but in the main he has won a lot of people over and has become a fans favourite. If he is to leave, he would be missed in my opinion.

I agree. I don't know who we'll get of a similar ability that wouldn't cost us a fortune.

Great post from Lenny on Defoe I agree with all of that.
I echo the comment of Spurcat and Roo on BAE as well that he would be greatly missed if sold. Unless Rose really is the real deal and not just looking good in a poor team.

If anyone on the Swansea board is as good as their word, then it's not just rumours. They've been talking about it for quite a while before the media got hold of it.

I like Assou-Ekotto a lot but he had a poor campaign, one way or another. Got injured early on and never looked quite right. Lost his place to Naughton and/or Vertonghen, which seemed harsh.
If we could bring in someone like Baines and still actually give Rose enough games to keep him happy, then I don't think we'd miss him, but that seems very unlikely.
His LOLing would be missed, either way. :afro:
