Well it depends if you think that we were definitely in for players like Coutinho. I do think that it was the hope of Bologna with Ramirez aswell, but nobody else came in for him in the end.

With Astori I meant that is what I think they have done/are doing. I would be very surprised if he came here over teams like Milan. Think they are basically trying to force other clubs hands to make moves early by saying that we are interested/have bid.

I'm not sure where it's come from, but apparently we have bid £4,000,000 for Will Buckley.

    Doubt this very much.

He's only just signed a new contract with Brighton anyway.

    Will Buckley, nah.
Will Hughes, now that's a player I would have.

Would be a good signing for that kind of money. He's a very good player.

I think you're right. Pochettino confirmed we made a bid for Coutinho when he was asked about him, but a lot of other players have been linked to us from Italy and I think that at least some of them must be agents mentioning our name to drive up the prices of their clients. I'm sure Ramirez would have happily gone somewhere else if anyone had matched our bid, and the fact that we are relatively rich in European terms is going to help us if we are going to get some of these other high-profile players. As I've said elsewhere, we want to get deals done early so they can gel into the squad, sure, but primarily so that we don't end up paying over the odds when other teams come in for these players.

I know we'd all love to believe that Cortese's DVD and "the project" will be enough to snag any player we can convince to sit down and listen, and they will say this after they've signed, but the fact is, for almost all players, it all comes down to money.

In other news, Eric Abidal is available...

Bit of a PR blunder for Barcelona not to offer him at least another year surely!

I quote: "I am not frustrated about not being able to sign him, I knew there was a small chance he would come here, but overall I have not had much time to consider new signings"

Are you telling me we weren't in for him?

Yes we were. Pochettino said he was upset not to get him after attempting to but that we had a chance.

Whilst it does come down to money I do think that having a manager like Pochetino and a player like Ramirez, as well as our final league position, the direction of the club and training ground etc will make us a better prospect than many might think.

If we add a top player early in the window all of a sudden I feel we could be real players in this transfer window and I think that's another reason why MP and NC want to get business done early. We want to convince players to come to us when we are competing against teams like West Ham, Sevilla or Werden Bremen type teams and having some quality players already comitted will certainly help.

There's been a lot of talk about Inter Milan but they are short of money, not in any european competion next year and have a high turnover of players/managers. Serie A is no longer seen as somewhere where everyone wants to play these days either. Whilst I accept that they have more behind them in terms of convincing players to join, we shouldn't be too far behind. I think we are on the right tracks and am delighted with some of the names linked.
